DIY Deck Building on a Budget

The first step in any successful DIY deck build is creating a solid plan. Decide on the size, layout, and location of your deck, keeping in mind both aesthetics and functionality.

Before you begin digging, it’s crucial to prioritize safety by calling 811, the nationwide number to reach your local utilities. This ensures you avoid underground electrical, water, or power lines. For marking out where my post holes will go, I used the Rust-Oleum Professional Inverted Marking Spray—simple and effective.

Next up, make a list of materials and tools you’ll need. To keep things budget-friendly, I relied heavily on The Home Depot Rental Center. Renting tools like an auger, wheelbarrow, and hammer drill is quick, easy, and affordable. If you can imagine it, The Home Depot has what you need to complete your project.

Now comes the fun part—building!

• I started by using the auger to create post holes, ensuring they were deep and sturdy.
• Each hole was secured with concrete form tubes and concrete, creating a strong foundation. I made sure all posts were level for a stable structure.
• Using the hammer drill, I secured the ledger board to the garage before moving on to cutting and laying the joists.

If your deck is on the larger side like mine, a miter saw will be your best friend for cutting joists—it made the process quick and smooth!

A step you don’t want to skip is adding joint deck tape to your joists. This tape creates a waterproof membrane that prevents wood rot and decay, prolonging the life of your deck. It’s quick, easy, and definitely worth the effort.

And finally, the most satisfying part—laying the deck boards! This is where your hard work starts coming to life, and you’ll truly begin to see your vision take shape.

Next up is building the stairs to complete your project. I secured the stair stringers to the joists and used the same deck boards to create the risers and treads. As you build, use a level every time you finish a new step—trust me, you don’t want your stairs to end up wonky!

To make the stairs more user-friendly, I went the extra mile by making them extra wide so two people can comfortably walk up or down at the same time.

Safety first—and that means railings! To ensure everything is up to code, check your local requirements for stair and deck railing heights and spacing.

For this project, I added stair railings on both sides of the stairs for extra stability, as well as deck railings where required for safety. As a finishing touch, I installed stylish black post caps. These affordable additions made a big impact, giving the deck a polished and modern look.

To tie everything together, I tackled landscaping to connect my new deck seamlessly to the yard. My backyard used to be a hilly, muddy mess, but with some creativity, I transformed the space.

I created a garden bed retaining wall, adding dimension and charm to the area. To make the transition from the deck to the lower yard more accessible and visually appealing, I added a simple walkway with natural-looking pavers and mulch. Now, the flow from the deck to the yard feels natural, and the space is a delight to look at.
