A Note From The Home Depot
Make a fun family holiday craft with the help of The Home Depot. Follow along Chad and Tiffany of The Mickens Fam teach us how to make DIY wooden snowmen!
Hey friends! The holidays are all about making memories, and this year we’ve got a super fun and easy family craft that you are going to love— DIY Wooden Snowmen!
It's an easy, creative holiday activity where everyone can add their own personal touch—whether it’s painting, decorating, or designing each snowman to reflect their style—and you’ll end up with adorable, homemade keepsakes that will bring joy and holiday spirit to your home for years to come! Plus, it’s a fun way to spend quality time together as a family.
For this project, we have partnered with The Home Depot to create something special that our family can make and enjoy for years to come, and you can too! It’s such a simple project, but it’s full of heart, and the best part is that everyone gets to make it their own.
Step 1: Cutting the Wood
First things first—let’s get the snowmen started!
You will need some wood (we used cedar fence pickets, a saw, a sander, and a measuring tape.
Next, measure out your wood by height of who the snowman represents and cut it to size. After cutting, be sure to sand down each board so the wood is smooth to the touch and will make for easy painting.
We had Chad handle the cutting while the girls cheered him on (safely, of course!). You do not have to be perfect here; that’s part of the charm!
Step 2: Painting Time!
Now for the fun part—let’s paint!
You will need white paint for the snowman bodies, plus other colors for hats, scarves, and whatever else you want to add.
Set up your stations and start painting! The best part? Each snowman can have its own look. Our girls love all things pink… so we added pink bows and pink scarves to theirs.
We had a blast getting a little messy with the paint, but honestly, that’s what makes it so fun!
Step 3: Time to Decorate
This is where the magic happens—time to bring your snowmen to life!
Grab some buttons, scarves, felt, glue, and markers for eyes and other details.
Add hats, scarves, and faces to make each snowman unique. Everyone gets to add their own personal touch. We went with different colored “hats”. To make the hats, we used strips of fabric wrapped around each board and secured them with E6000 glue to the board and an elastic at the top to form the “hat”. Super easy!
Our snowmen all turned out so different, but that is what makes them so special. They are like little wooden versions of our family!
Step 4: Show Off Your Snowmen
You did it! Time to show off your creations. We sealed each of ours with sealant so that we could display them on our front porch this holiday season.
I love that these little guys are now part of our holiday decor, and we can grow our collection every year with new snowmen as the girls grow. We cannot wait to pull them out every holiday season and remember the fun we had putting them together as a family this year.
- Family Bonding: This was such a fun way to spend time together. The girls loved being part of the process, and it’s something we will always remember.
- Easy and Fun: Seriously, this project is super simple and does not take long at all. Perfect for a weekend afternoon!
- The Home Depot Supplies: We got everything we needed from The Home Depot, so it was super convenient.
- A Keepsake to Treasure: These snowmen are something we will keep forever and display every holiday season.
So, if you are looking for a fun family activity this holiday season, give this one a try! It would also be so fun to paint wooden nutcrackers, gingerbread men, etc. The options are endless!
Head to The Home Depot, grab your supplies, and get ready to make some memories.
Happy holidays from our family to yours!
