Upcycle a Vase to Create the Perfect Centerpiece
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and I know I wanted a berry and mustard theme for this year! I did not want a clear vase to display my florals this time around, so I opted to upcycle the vase using items I already had laying around from previous projects.
Materials Needed:
- Old or unused vase
- Premixed Joint Compound
- Self Adhesive Drywall Tape
- Gloves
- Spray Paint (I used BEHR Chiffon Cream)
- Drop Cloth
- Floral Foam (optional)
- Fresh Flowers (optional)
- Curly Willow Branches (optional)
Instructions
On a clean, dry vase, add the self-adhesive drywall tape all around. It’s okay if it overlaps. The goal of this step is to completely cover wherever the joint compound will touch, which includes the rim. I left the bottom of the vase untouched for this project. The nice thing about this particular tape is that it’s self-adhesive, so there is no need to add any glue.
Next, protect your surface with a drop cloth and your hands with gloves. Add premixed joint compound on top of the tape. Gently press the joint compound into the tape, making sure it’s just enough to cover the surface. Set aside to dry (about a day).
Add a second layer of joint compound to hide the drywall tape. I encourage you to have fun with this step! Don’t try to be perfect and smooth - the texture of the drywall will leave a nice modern finish. Let it dry for several hours.
Once the vase had some time to completely dry, spray the vase with your favorite spray paint. I opted to use BEHR Chiffon Cream. It’s a perfect matte creamy finish that captures the texture of the vase beautifully.
Add floral foam and add your choice of fresh flowers and curly willow for a beautiful fall look, or you can opt to leave it empty. The texture of the vase is so beautiful on its own.
