Keep your pool open and your guests and residents happy with commercial swimming pool maintenance guidelines from The Home Depot. Our guide provides helpful upkeep tips that help you conduct regular pool maintenance, get your pool ready for weekend traffic, clean up after pool parties and store pool chemicals properly to ensure your guests and residents enjoy swimming all season long.

Pool Chemical Tips

  • Read pool chemical directions prior to use, and use only as directed.
  • Always dilute pool chemicals in a bucket of water as instructed.
  • Never mix pool chemicals before adding them to your water.
  • Add chemicals in front of a return line or evenly distribute them around the pool.
  • Never add chemicals through the pool skimmer system.
  • Never add pool chemicals while the pool is in use or occupied.

Regular Pool Maintenance

Ensure your pool’s water is balanced daily with reliable test strips or kits to safeguard equipment and your guests and residents. Balancing the water prevents corrosion and keeps scale deposits from forming. We recommend 4-way test strips for daily checks for total alkalinity, pH, free chlorine and bromine levels. If your pool’s levels read outside of ideal range, apply balancers as needed.

  • Use clean and dry plastic, glass or enamel measuring cups for chemicals.
  • Only use prescribed chlorine cartridges in pool chlorine floaters.
  • Only install or refill automatic chlorinators in well-ventilated rooms.
