To rent a trailer, your tow vehicle must be appropriately rated and equipped (Frame mounted receiver) for the job. You will need:
• Towing Capacity: Your vehicle's towing capacity must exceed the weight of the trailer plus the weight of your intended cargo. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for its specific tow rating. If your personal vehicle is not tow-rated, consider renting one of our flatbed trucks or pickup trucks, which are already equipped with a hitch.
• Hitch Equipment: A hitch receiver must be installed to the frame, and a 2-inch ball is typically required for both (Solid-wall and Channel Frame and Garden) open utility and enclosed trailers (Do not Rent in US).
• Wiring: Functional electrical wiring for trailer lights (turn signals, brakes and running lights) must be present.

Every trailer has a maximum Load Weight Capacity (the weight of the cargo it can safely carry) and a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) (the maximum total weight of the trailer plus the cargo). You must never exceed these limits. Always weigh your cargo beforehand, and ensure the load is distributed with approximately 60% of the weight concentrated in the front half of the trailer bed.
Trailers are generally rented in blocks:
• Minimum Rental: 4 hours.
• Standard Rates: Daily (24 hours), Weekly, and 4-week Monthly options are available. Pricing varies by trailer type, size and location. Late returns will incur additional fees, so please call your local Rental Center in advance if you need an extension.
To rent a trailer, you must be at least 18 years of age (21 for some other equipment) and provide:
• A valid, government-issued driver's license.
• A valid credit card for the security deposit, which is typically $300-$500 depending on the trailer type. Note: Debit cards and cash are not accepted for the deposit.
You must have your own valid auto insurance policy. The Home Depot does not sell insurance for the trailers. While we recommend purchasing the optional Equipment Protection Plan to limit your out-of-pocket costs for accidental damage to the trailer itself, it is not a substitute for liability insurance. You should verify that your personal auto policy covers the liability of towing a rented trailer.
Yes. While our associates will confirm your vehicle is properly equipped, it is your sole responsibility to physically connect the trailer to your hitch and ensure all coupling, safety chains and electrical cables are securely fastened before leaving the lot. We also recommend inspecting the lights before every trip.
