Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What planting zone am I in?

Check the USDA plant zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly over the years. Zones with bigger numbers can plant earlier in the year. Pick plants that are intended for your area and up the odds of successful gardening.

Does the type of mulch delivery affect the cost?

The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on your order size. We can deliver small orders via car for a $3 fee. As orders get bigger, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive mulch projects, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Of course, you can always choose our free in-store pickup option as well, and orders that meet a purchase threshold may qualify for free delivery. Not sure how much you'll need? Check out our mulch calculator to get started. Keep scrolling for details below on mulch delivery via van, car, or truck.

Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?

Yes, you're welcome to pick up your mulch yourself. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch online with store pickup or buy it in-store, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate will load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or bulk mulch, delivery is easiest.

Does my mulch get delivered in a car?

If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called bulk or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.

How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?

When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Normally, these are Pro customers, serious DIYers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.

How do I treat weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or your lungs.

Is brown grass dead?

It could be, but it's also likely taking a nap during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. Here’s how you can check to see if it’s dormant: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. We have the lawn care you need for healthy cool-season and warm-season grass.

How often should I water the lawn?

If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, lawns, and gardens. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.

Do my plants need fertilizer?

Once you've gotten your plants into the soil, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one intended for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from the heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-chilled air is ready.

What do you carry for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a barbecue party. Some focus on the grill or fire pit, while others concentrate on yard games. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat away the afternoon. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitoes.

Set Up For Summertime
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We can help. At The Home Depot Golden Garden Center, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has crispy and brown blades of grass, don't panic. It's possible that you've got a cool-season grass that basically goes to sleep and turns brown in the heat of the summer. If that's the case, it won't be a patchy brown, but brown everywhere. Gently pull out a blade of grass to check if it’s still got live roots: If it comes right out, the grass is likely dead and you'll need to replace it. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting under the ground. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week but not fertilized.

For warm-season grass that stays green in the summer, water a bit every few days and deeply once a week. The amount of water should add up to about an inch, more or less, each week. Don't overwater, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the hose or sprinkler again. Water your lawn when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can test with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during periods of drought. It's fine to let it grow taller this time of the year, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your vegetable garden, don't forget about the trees and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. It's not difficult to learn how to water bushes and trees — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and prevent it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on your trees and shrubs. Pests can destroy your greenery if you don't catch them in time.

Look for holes in leaves, spots on bark or leaves, or a network of raised lines on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as they may ultimately end the life of your tree or shrub.

Grow Your Own Herbs
Get fresh flavors to accent garden-fresh vegetables when you add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise them outside, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden. Read our herb gardening guide for beginners for details.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in small plant pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which doesn't use soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the appearance of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees as accents, a few more to bear fruit, or a whole mini-forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how far the root ball extends outward, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from water pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and wend into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if disease or a storm weakened them.

If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze as soon as possible.
