Does the type of mulch delivery affect the cost?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you meet a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders arrive in a car with a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans for a $35 fee, and large orders will ship to you in a box truck or flatbed truck at a $79 fee.
Can I pick up my mulch order myself?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. We're also ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch online with store pickup or purchase it in-store, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate will load your small-to-medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk yard or bagged mulch, delivery is easiest.
How can I get small batches of mulch delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called loose or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of loose mulch, you'll get box truck or flatbed delivery. Normally, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What do I do about all these weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't get in your lungs or touch your skin.
Can I fix grass damaged by pets?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. You'll need to rehydrate those roots. It should perk up by the following week. The method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.
When should I water my flowers?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: gardens, lawns, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it when it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your climate, lawn health, and grass type, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize my plants?
Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from the heat, shelter under a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
What do you carry for backyard entertaining?
Backyard entertaining doesn't have to be a BBQ party. If you plan on firing up the grill, make certain you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat away the afternoon or maybe cook a meal in an outdoor kitchen. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free yard without pesky mosquitoes.

As summer stretches on, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, grass can get scorched, and plants can dry out. We can help. Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight, or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Mirrors or car windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by extreme wear or pet behavior, you must use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care to it. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. For example, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to water the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent types to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of volunteer herb sprouts, keep them in decorative plant pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Be sure to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
