The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on your order size. We can deliver small orders via car for a $3 fee. As orders get bigger, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive projects, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate will load your small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or yard mulch, we encourage you to choose delivery.
How can I get small batches of mulch delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called yard or bulk mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Often, these are landscapers, serious DIYers, or Pro customers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.
Is my lawn dead?
It could be, but it's probably just taking a break during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just brown and crispy. Here’s how you can check to see if it’s dormant: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy. When should I water the lawn?
If you can water at least once a day, during the evening or in the early morning, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means much of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: trees, grass, plants, and veggies. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the perfect time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your lawn health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize my flower garden?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn an uncomfortable afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Give it some TLC so it looks fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a push lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, buildings, or fences.
Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They're growing fast, filled with blooms before you know it. Trim wild branches to the shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave tree topping and major tree maintenance to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than summer flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or an arched arbor so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Go with vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Jasmine, wisteria, and ivy are common options for creating a stunning pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't.
