What ways are there to get mulch delivered?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you meet a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders will arrive via car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders will ship to you in a box truck or flatbed at a $79 fee.
Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you can pick up your own mulch. We're also happy to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. One of our associates can load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or bulk yard mulch, we recommend delivery.
How much does it cost for a small order of mulch to be delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called bulk or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may get free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for flatbed or large truck delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of bulk mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll qualify for flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are Pro customers, serious DIYers, or landscapers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds in my veggie garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.
Is it possible to revive a sunburned lawn?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. The method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.
What's the best time to water?
If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: lawns, gardens, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the ideal time. The plants still need water to live, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to add a lawn fertilizer.
Does my garden need fertilizer?
Once you've got your plants in the ground, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

As summer stretches on, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with shade, irrigation, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass seed you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh and manicured. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around sidewalks, buildings, or fences.
Bushes, trees, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds before you know it. Prune them back to a more manicured state with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small trees and bushes.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're watering your vegetable garden, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than summer flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get seriously parched in the sun. It's easy to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time.
Look for holes in leaves, spots on leaves or bark, or a network of raised lines on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Research and care for any of these issues as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree.
Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap those parts of the plants. Fasten the plant to a fence, pole, or trellis with plant ties and wires, string, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider, and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze.
Strawberries, watermelon, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the appearance of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.
A backyard forest can be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider how far the root ball extends outward, how deep the taproots go, and the full-grown size of the trees you want.
