Is it expensive to get mulch delivered?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. We can deliver small orders with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive projects, we have a fleet of box trucks and flatbeds ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. Do you offer self-pickup for mulch orders?
Yes, you can pick up your own mulch. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate will load your small-to-medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bulk or bagged mulch, delivery is easiest.
Does my mulch get delivered in a car or van instead of a truck?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called bulk or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for flatbed or large truck delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk mulch, you'll get box truck or flatbed delivery. Normally, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or your skin.
Is my grass dead?
It could be, but it's likely napping during those summer temperatures. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just brown and crispy. Here's how you can check on it: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. That grass stays green if it's healthy. Is there an ideal time to water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: trees, grass, plants, and veggies. Whenever you water, give all the plants a good drink, and don't skip it if it's not the perfect time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to look into adding a lawn fertilizer.
Does my garden need fertilizer?
Once you've gotten your plants settled into the ground, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one specially formulated for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter under a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Eventually, it'll need some maintenance to look fresh and manicured. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around fences, sidewalks, or buildings.
Bushes, shrubs, and trees climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. They're growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Prune them back to better show off their verdant beauty with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave tree topping and major tree maintenance to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small bushes and trees.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're ensuring your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. To avoid a yard full of mint or other herbs, keep them in decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.

Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Go with vine plants that are native to your area. They attract pollinators and are a good choice for success. Grape vines are a classic option, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years.
