Check the USDA plant hardiness zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly over the years. Zones with bigger numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Pick plants that are intended for your zone and up your chances of successful gardening.
How do I get my mulch?
The Home Depot offers flexible mulch delivery options nationwide based on the size of your order. For small orders, we can deliver with a car for a $3 fee. As orders grow to medium-sized, we switch to a van for a $35 fee. For massive jobs, we have a fleet of flatbeds and box trucks ready to deliver to your job site for a $79 fee. What if I want to pick up the mulch myself?
Yes, you're welcome to pick up your own mulch. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An associate will load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged or loose mulch, delivery is a wise choice.
How can I get small batches of mulch delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Bulk mulch, also called yard or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
How much mulch qualifies for large truck or flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering pallets of bagged mulch or huge quantities of bulk yard mulch, you'll be looking at box truck or flatbed delivery. Most of the time, these are Pro customers, landscapers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
How do I treat weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or landscape liner fabric to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off at ground level. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear thick rubber gloves and a respirator to ensure that it doesn't irritate your skin or lungs.
Can I fix grass damaged by pets?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. The method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.
How often should I water the lawn?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's extremely hot out, twice is better. Watering when it's hottest outside means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: plants, veggies, trees, and grass. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it if it's not the perfect time. The plants still need water to live, no matter what time it is. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Does my flower garden need fertilizer?
Once you've planted your flowers or veggie plants, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, citrus tree fertilizer, or general garden fertilizer blend. Avoid applying more often than recommended. Remember to always water immediately after, as directed, so your plants don't get fertilizer burn.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from relentless summer heat, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
How do I make my patio look special for entertaining?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass seed or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. Get it looking fresh again with a little TLC. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around buildings, fences, or sidewalks.
Trees, shrubs, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with blooms and buds before you know it. Trim wild branches to the size and shape you want with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw for small branches on trees and bushes.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and water. You'll need both to keep plants growing and spirits high with summer flowering. Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative plant pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, perlite, or rock chips.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Set up vines to climb an arched arbor or trellis to provide both shade and beauty. Vine plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Wisteria, jasmine, and ivy are common options for creating a stunning pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to the amount of sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun.
