Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I check my USDA planting zone?

Check the USDA zone map, as planting zones have shifted slightly over time. Zones with bigger numbers can start their garden earlier in the year. Up the odds of successful gardening by planting veggies, flowers, and trees that thrive in your zone.

How can I get my mulch delivered?

This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you reach a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party to help you get started on your landscaping project by delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders will arrive via car with a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans for a $35 fee, and large orders will ship to you in a box truck or flatbed truck at a $79 fee.

Can I pick up my mulch order myself?

Yes, if you prefer, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're ready to help if you need it. After you purchase mulch online with store pickup or buy it in-store, go to the drive-thru or mulch loading zone if your store has one. An associate will load a small or medium mulch order directly into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of loose or bagged mulch, delivery is a wise choice.

Does my mulch get delivered in a car?

If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a regular van or car for just a $3 delivery fee. Yard mulch, also called bulk or loose mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from one store to the next. However, you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.

Who qualifies for flatbed or large truck mulch delivery?

When you're ordering huge quantities of yard mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll be looking at flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are serious DIYers, landscapers, or Pro customers working on a major landscaping project. There's usually a delivery fee and minimum pallet order. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.

What are good ways to get rid of weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weeds snap off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.

Can I fix grass damaged by pets?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. You'll need to rehydrate those roots. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new sod, grass, or patch and repair grass seed.

How often should I water my garden?

If you can water at least once a day, close to sunrise or sunset, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering when the sun is at its peak means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you've got growing: lawns, gardens, and trees. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it if it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, no matter what time it is. Depending on your grass type, lawn health, and climate, you may also want to apply a lawn fertilizer.

Does my garden need fertilizer?

Once you've got your plants into pots or the ground, you'll need to make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer to give your garden a boost. You can even find one intended for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Follow the application instructions and don't add extra. Always water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from the heat, shelter under a covered gazebo or a patio umbrella. If you have sturdy structures like a house or a shed, make your own shade by attaching shade sails and awnings. But sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a misting fan or patio mister can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.

How do I make my patio look special for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a tiny backyard refresh can make a big difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can breathe new life into a patio space.

Settle Into Summer
As we stretch into the dog days of summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, grass can get scorched, and plants can dry out. We can help. At The Home Depot Ponce Garden Center, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has brown and crispy blades of grass, don't panic. It's possible that you've got a cool-season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the summer sun. If that's the case, it won't be a patchy brown, but brown everywhere. Gently pull out a blade of grass to check if it’s still got live roots: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new sod or grass seed. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting beneath the surface. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week but not fertilized.

Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Don't overwater, and let the lawn dry out after major rains before you get out the sprinkler or hose again. Water your lawn when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can test with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during extreme hot spells or periods of drought. It's fine to let it grow a little taller this time of the year, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to water the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get wet, but they’ll recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific succulent varieties to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Apply fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the right nutrients.

Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many veggie plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap those parts of the plants. Fasten the plant to a trellis, pole, or fence with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then, the stem has room to grow wider, and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze.

Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of string, a sling, old nylons, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room between plants or fit even more of them.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Learn how to plant a tree before you shop — whether you're planting deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider the full-grown size of the trees you want, how deep the taproots go, and how far the root ball extends outward. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if a major storm or disease weakened them.

If you've diligently planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
