Using for my first project. Do we need to water and stomp when laying this paver base. How much water is required. Is this sticky and bonded together ...
Asked by: Rao
I didnt add any water. There was a decent amount of moisture in the bag when I opened it. I pounded it flat with a brick in narrow places and a tamper where it was wide enough to do so. Once it dried it seemed to be somewhat bonded, though not to the extent that cement would be. Since it is only the base and will have stone or brick on top of it, I dont think it would need to be bonded any better than it does. I make a fairly thin layer (less than 2"). If you do it thicker, it may have a bit more resilience than mine did.

What is the bag weight

It is important to know this regarding pick-up or delivery ....It seem Home Depot should have the answer to this .....without having such a delay.....It is probably printed somewhere on the Bag......

How many bags would I need to do an area 12' x 4' with a depth of 2 inches? I am going to be using the 12 x 12 Patio Stones.

It would be helpful if Home Depot had a calculator for this stuff on the website like they do for buying bags of mulch.

Can you use this for leveling before putting up a pool?

Asked by: adotson95
You might be able to, but I'd recommend sand instead. The paver base includes larger angular aggregate that could damage or tear the pool material if put directly on top.

I knew ahead of time what I was getting, and for a project of this type and size, it'll work fine. But, to be clear, this is NOT real paver base, it's just a bag containing sand, some crushed concrete particulate and small pebbles. You can reproduce it's contents exactly by buying a bag of sand and a bag of pebbles and mixing them - which is precisely what Pavestone does. Real paver base, also known as 'Quarry Process', 'Crusher Run' and 'Road Stone' in different areas, is a mix of 3/4" and smaller crushed stone and either stone dust or concrete dust, you'll never find a whole 3/4" pebble in the real stuff. When properly compacted, the real stuff will feel like a concrete floor, the stuff in this bag is closer to what the shoreline feels like after the tide has receded. Bottom line, for small, non-critical basing needs, it'll work, but for anything else call a quarry and get a bag/pallet of the real stuff delivered. For the price of these 20 bags I could have got nearly 2 metric tons of real quarry process delivered to my house in 7 days.

The rocks and debris were so inconsistent (causing tiles not to settle level even with a layer of paving sand) that I had to stop grading to rake out the rocks into a wheelbarrow. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this load of rocks I’m in possession of now. I can stand a few rocks but found a bolt, Laffy Taffy wrappers, and rocks around 4 inches round. Needless to say, this paver base labor cost me more time and money (in extra sand) than I had originally bargained for. If I had to do all over again, I would have tested one bag before opening them all and went with another brand with better (or any) quality control.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Great with Leveling Sand Had an area with no grass that we wanted to add a paver patio. I initially leveled the existing dirt and sand area out and watered the heck out of it for a week to ensure the existing material had compacted. I then added 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base and ran a plate compactor over it two times in each direction. I then added an additional 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base, and ran the plate compactor again over it twice, in both directions. It is really important that you ensure there are no high or low spots (I kept it under 1/4"). I then placed a stick of 1" PVC Pipe along one edge of the area, and another 8' away. I then added 1" of the Leveling Sand between the PVC, and then pulled a very straight 2x4 along the two pipes (called screeding) to create a smooth, level surface. I repeated this until the entire area had been completed. Was then just a matter of placing down the pavers, adding the border to keep everything secure, and swept some PermaSand in the joints, got it wet, and the patio looks incredible!

Well, since I watched the Pavestone YouTube videos on how to lay paver stones, of course, the videos all advertised the company’s products. After the ground was tilled, I payed down 23 bags of this base which was full of rocks and a mixture of other things. I probably didn’t need this. So, I rented the compactor from Home Depot and flattened the land area as best as possible. The compactor worked well. After that, as I smoothed out the area with a 2x4 wood stick, I laid down 16x16 red stones. Because the paver base had so many rocks and lumpy things in it, some of the stones did not set right. They were not leveled thus, causing me to lift up the stone, use a garden shovel to dig out some of the rocks and lumpy things, smooth the area out with a piece of wood and then lay the stone back in place. I’d probably say that I’m not sure if it is necessary to use this base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure why there are so many negative reveiws... So I bought this product instead of buying a truckload of limestone base material. Guys... this product is exactly perfect for creating a good solid base layer so i’m not really sure why all the negative complaints... it is the perfect size gravel to level just about any area. If yall watch some youtube videos on how to install pavers you’ll see that this material goes UNDER EVERYTHING ELSE. In other words this is the first layer after you excavate your area. It IS NOT SCREED SAND. Once you spread this layer into your area it has to be plate compacted. Or compacted with a hand tamp. Worked great for me and was a decent alternative to buying a yard/pile of limestone material from a landscape company.

Material quality is good - nice consistency. Packaging is also favorable, making it easier to move to the job site (little to no shoveling/wheel barrow work). Price is very unfavorable. I would only recommend this for patch work, really small jobs or if you barely ran out of material trying to complete your patio (my case ;-) ). It is 3X to 8X higher cost than having paver base delivered by a landscape materials supplier, including the supplier's delivery charge. One would have to be a bit carefree to order 250+ bags for a project sized like the one at the bottom of the quantity table on the back packaging.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I I found that there is rocks in the mix.... I I found that there is rocks in the mix. Way to many and way too large. There should be very little small rocks. I used a hand stomp. I had to separate the rocks out. After separating it . 70% was rocks & 30% usable material.
