Building a studio/workshop and need/want quiet. Thinking of layering a bunch, can anyone recommend/advise on my thoughts. 12 layers Inside Studio --------------- 1. Drywall 2. MLV 3. SoundBoard 4. Acoustic Tape (two layers) (MLV Sponge Tape) ODD studs 5. STUDs w ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound between 6. Acoustic Tape (two layers) (MLV Sponge Tape) EVEN studs 7. OSB 8. MLV 9. HardieBacker (Fire Protection on two sides for close properties) 10. Tyvek 11. Redwood siding The Ceiling will be typical 2x4 joists lean-to w/Radiant OSB on top and LP SmartSide facing the interior. I was thinking of putting this SoundBoard between the SmartSide and the studs, I know I need ~1/2" - 3/4" gap between the Radiant OSB and any insulation. What would be the best way to insulate and allow for the gap? A standard 2x4 is 3 1/2" so I think the ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound would need to be cut down the middle? ROOF -------------- 1. Roofing Tiles 2. Tar Paper? or MLV? or Both? 3. Radiant OSB 4. Acoustic Tape (two layers) (MLV Sponge Tape) ODD studs 5. STUD with ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound cut in half? between 6. Acoustic Tape (two layers) (MLV Sponge Tape) EVEN studs 7. SoundBoard 8. LP SmartSide panels The (Mass (L)oaded (V)inyl is 1/2 lb 4'x50' sheets The Acoustic Tape is double sided 1/8" MLV. Thanks for your input/suggestions!

MLV on both sides seems pointless. Best to have room within a room. One idea: Exterior wall-->studs w/ Roxul-->air gap-->quietrock-->studs w/roxul-->resilient channel-->soundboard-->MLV-->quietrock. With bass traps on the inner walls, nobody will hear anything. The above is my setup for the one wall between the control and live rooms. All the other walls are: Exterior wall-->studs w/ Roxul--> resilient channel--> 5/8 drywall --> quietrock. Of course, diffusion panels, bass traps, and absorption panels mounted on the interior walls are essential.

Can this be sandwiched between sheetrock?

A customer has a preexisting rental property, that is near to train tracks. Can this be placed over the top of the existing drywall and a new layer of drywall put sandwiching this product between? Or do the existing walls need to be removed first?
Asked by: Vindood
Anything can be sandwiched between sheetrock, not sure why that last person said that

Would this be good to use to line the inside of a shed that houses an air compressor?
Asked by: kyle
SOUNDSTOP can be used in homes and commercial buildings where airborne noise and sound transmission from room to room needs to be eliminated. The product also blocks outside noise from heavy traffic, blaring horns, airports, children playing, or other exterior noises that are a concern. SOUNDSTOP takes shock or sound vibrations that travel through drywall and stops the movement of the sound or shock to the other side. SOUNDSTOP deadens sound transfer from shared walls, corridors, media rooms, workshops, laundries, etc.

My house had an exposed waste water pipe running from the second floor down through a bedroom closet on the first floor. Instead of putting the pipe in the wall, my brilliant builder cut holes in the corner of the closet shelves and ran the pipe through. The result was that any time water was used on the second floor, the pipe made a loud splashing sound in the bedroom that was very annoying. I wrapped the pipe in fiberglass insulation and framed the corner with this sound board and now the pipe is virtually silent. This board is very fibrous so it required a primer and 2 coats of paint to cover, but it is paintable to match surrounding walls.

I put it over two bedroom windows and now I am sleeping much better. Stiffen it with a couple of backing boards, add a couple of handles, and you can easily make a snug-fitting plug for window openings.

If you put this on the ceiling of a noisy room it will have an effect similar to putting a wall to wall carpet on the floor - it will reduce that kind of irritating high-frequency clatter in rooms with hard surfaces. I've used this product this way for many years and it works well. If you're concerned about how it looks, there are a variety of solutions. A lot of users cover the panel with fabric - very much like making a bed with hospital corners, although you'll want to fasten it with staples and (since the board is a little soft), helping it out with a little contact cement. I solution I like, although more expensive, works well in very contemporary settings, which is to apply over the top of the sound board a perforated metal. It looks as if it would be noisy, but in fact since the panels are around 50 percent holes, it still cuts down high-frequency clatter considerably. We did an entire large living room/kitchen this way at 610 Rhode Island Street in San Francisco. Google the address and you'll probably find some pictures showing how the perf metal looks. It's quite handsome if you like very contemporary architecture. We used it with a zinc finish, but it's available in some other formats as well. But, also, please note what this product is NOT. It is not designed to impede the passage of sound - it cuts down high-frequency sound but lower frequencies sail right on through. Why? Beause the one essential thing about stopping sound is MASS. Weight, in other words. And this is a lightweight product. There are products on the market (from Auralex and others) that will stop sound, but this isn't one of them.

I installed this on the ceiling of my entire house to try and dissipate the sound from my flat roof. I then installed tongue and groove over it. It didn't make as much of a difference in the sound level as I was expecting but, it did help. The price was right, so I got what I paid for. If you need a product that will totally deaden the noise you should look into the more expensive sound proofing materials
