Everything depends on how you want you finished window trim to look. The SILL MOULDING fits under the bottom edge of the window to drain the water away from the window and building. So you need trim for the top and sides to join over the molding. You would cut the sill to go out past the window under the trim molding. For 3-1/2 in. wide trim you would cut your sill to stick out 3-1/2 in. on each side. The trim molding would be cut at an angle on the bottom to fit tightly to the sill and caulked to seal it. I would purchase trim for the top and sides such as the Veranda 3/4 in. x 3-1/2 in. x 8 ft. White PVC Reversible Trim (6-Pack) Link to a suitable trim shown below. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Veranda-3-4-in-x-3-1-2-in-x-8-ft-White-PVC-Reversible-Trim-6-Pack-827002202/305848439

Replacing old window ( weight in the wall )

Without seeing your window it is hard to say.... however.... Everything depends on how you want you finished window trim to look. The SILL MOULDING fits under the bottom edge of the window to drain the water away from the window and building. It probably would not work to put a sill on top of a sill. I would probably remove all of the old trim and sill. Then you would replace the trim for the top and sides to join over the molding. You would cut the sill to go out past the window under the trim molding. For 3-1/2 in. wide trim you would cut your sill to stick out 3-1/2 in. on each side. The trim molding would be cut at an angle on the bottom to fit tightly to the sill and caulked to seal it. I would purchase trim for the top and sides such as the Veranda 3/4 in. x 3-1/2 in. x 8 ft. This molding piece goes at the bottom of the window. The angle is to allow water to drain away.

Is this trim real wood or what is it made of ?

As the title says, this moulding is made of "Vinyl Composite Sill Moulding". It is not wood. It is widely considered better, since it will not rot.

What type(s) of paint can be used to change the moulding color?

Exterior latex or oil-based paint should cover; stain would not. However, material is somewhat glossy and may be difficult to cover with paint. Much of its advantage is that it does not require painting.

Does this come longer than 84" ?

You could probably order more than one and use PVC cement to connect them end to end.

Mounding was perfect for my project. This was just what I needed to build out the sill moulding for my sisters kitchen windows. It was impossible to find a complete replacement sill stock. This piece allowed me to refurbish the 80 year old trim by adding it to the front edge to replace the aged and weathered wood. I would recommend it!

Used this sill molding to transition from Hardi to stone tile on my little house. Easy to work with; takes paint well; and will handle the hot sun and rain (put this on my garage 5 years ago, and know that it holds up better than the wood trim!).

I replaced 28 window sills and all the vinyl sills and noses were of excellent quality and easy to work with. On my house with brick veneer, there were three windows where the slightly narrower new sills almost didn't reach out over the edge of the bricks. So there might have been an eighth of an inch less than the old wood sills--but generous caulking bridged the difference.

Replaced my rotted wood sills
So happy to have found this. I had two very degraded wood sills. These fit perfectly. We had to cut a little out each side next to the house to clear an obstacle in the frame.
