I would recommend no more than 5 feet as it bows in the middle. However, an additional bracket in the middle would prevent this if near to a shelf.
comes in 6-8' lengths, don't need too much of a gap. you may need to trim the coating on the ends a bit for best fit. you an do it with a utility knife. pretty easy stuff. enjoy
