Product Overview

  • Ornamental landscape grass with purple/burgundy foliage
  • Plant in sun to part shade : Water regularly until established
  • Hand selected and delivered fresh from the nursery
Rubrum, more commonly known as Purple Fountain Grass, is a great way to provide color to your landscape. Rubrum will produce rose red flower spikes from mid-summer to fall. In areas where the temperature gets below 20°F this plant should be treated as an annual, but in warmer climates expect this grass to fade to brown in late fall. You will then need to cut it back and wait until mid-spring when it will sprout back up for another year of foliage and blooms.
  • Great as a landscape specimen or border and mass planting
  • Rose red flowering plumes
  • Grows best in full sun
  • Water thoroughly twice per week until established, then water once per week
  • Fertilize every spring with slow-release fertilizer
  • Winter hardy in USDA zones 8-11

These are hardy to zones 8-11? Then they are not considered perennial in Pittsburg, Pa right? I noticed in another question you mentioned they would be going dormant and then coming back in the spring. They will not will they in zone 6? They have to be taken in for the winter?
Asked by: JudyY
That is correct, this plant is hardy from zone 8-11, and if you wish to have this plant in zone 7 or lower you will have to take it in every winter or treat it as an annual and re plant every year

1) If i order the 1 gallon today 12/2/17 approx how tall will it be this summer? 2) Are the 1 gal. mature plants when they ship?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Julie
This plant will currently be going dormant and will die back until new foliage emerges in mid-spring. Once the new foliage matures in summer it should be approx 2-3 ft tall depending on growing conditions. These plants are mature and fully rooted
