AnswerYes. my wife and I removed the anti-rust finish (she did 70%) with paint thinner, latex gloves and elbow grease. Mineral spirits will work as well, but it's more expensive. We did it outside where ventilation is not a concern.

I used this length and several others to build a writing desk for my son. For my purpose, consistency of the lengths between pieces was important. These products worked very well for this little project. We cleaned the pieces up with paint thinner and added a couple coats of matte clear coat also purchased at Home Depot to get the finish you're seeing in the picture. The table top is built with some surplus rough cut cedar from Home depot that I had lying around. It was planed to 1.5 inches.
