1 in. x 3 in. x 8 ft. Primed MDF Board

Overview

MDF has many advantages over plank wood, particleboard, or high density fiberboard. It's very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine. This makes it have low tear out, which means that when sawed, the end has a smooth cut instead of a jagged edge. This also means that a coat of primer and a couple of coats of paint take well, leaving an attractive, finished surface unlike other composite wood products.

  • It can be nailed, glued, screwed, or stapled, making it as versatile as plank wood
  • Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, is a composite wood product similar to particleboard. It's made out of wood waster fibers glued together with resinl heat, and pressure. MDF is appropriate for many applications, from cabinetry to moulding to shelving
  • Builders value MDF because it can be nailed, glued, screwed, stapled, or attached with dowels, wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine, which makes it very smooth, does not warp or split, and does not expand and contract like natural wood
  • Oil-base or latex paints can be used when finishing MDF boards
  • Excellent for interior use trimming windows, doors and cased openings

Questions & Answers

Can MDF Boards be routed. Like for cabinet doors

Asked by: Jeff
MDF Boards can be routed and shaped with any carbide tool....you will get a nice clean profile. I recommend Priming the cut surfaces prior to painting as the raw MDF will absorb paint rapidly compared to the primed surfaces.

Why do you call a board that is 0.669" thick a 1" board? Two-thirds of an inch? That is REALLY stretching the "nominal" term. MDF material should be sold by its actual size.
Asked by: b0bb0
The 1" product identifier is the historical industry terminology for products in this class. Actual board thickness in this 1" class of products ranges from 3/4" to 11/16" to 18mm to 16mm...and many others in-between. We make sure to identify our product with the actual thickness "0.669" so the consumer knows the exact thickness by which this specific product is sold.
