Questions & Answers

Can I use for bed slats for a full bed

Asked by: Sheryl
I don't agree with using these as bed support. You may end up with sagging. unless a child is using the bed- I think hardwood would be a better option, its more money but will hold up longer. I know 'whitewood' is different species but here in the northeast its usually pine that doesn't hold up well over spans, I'm not sure if in other areas you may get spruce that has better bending strength and would still be whitewood.

How many of these would it take to do a 12x16 foot porch

Asked by: Huffy
Well basic math would indicate about 64 are needed for that area, but you'd probably want to consider something pressure treated if they are being used outside. Common deck boards are the way to go. https://www.homedepot.com/p/WeatherShield-5-4-in-x-6-in-x-12-ft-Ground-Contact-Pressure-Treated-Premium-Pine-Decking-Board-253944/206967716

No it is soft pine. You need hardwood like oak or maple which is more expensive

Had to use pipe clamps to frame a wall with this crap. Yes it's lumber but more like fence lumber. And I culled out the best I could find in the half of unit left. The features that stood out the most was the twists and curves in each stud. Lumber is utility grade. Just got this stuff and used it right away to frame 2 walls before it twisted any more. In 92-5/8 inch precut stud 2 x 4, one end was 5/16" out of alignment with opposite end less than 8 ft away. This stuff myst have been bowed and twisted before kilm drying. I am going to steel studs if this is the best there is.

If there was pressure treat lumber this nice I could build a decent gate that just might possibly be square. Unfortunatel that does not seem to be the case in America today without your own milling equipment and a workshop the size of a warehouse! Meanwhile for leveling and alignment holding this 1 X 8 is pretty darn nice and stable, if you don't mind hunting through the offerings some times. It is worth the time.

I have purchased to make furniture, a bookcase, a tilt out trash container. This is good for country style furniture, with a few small knots that are still able to be screwed into. the edges are square and for the most part pieces are straight. compared to other options this is by far the best quality for price. oak and maple is much more expensive, while lower grades of pine are knotty and bowed.

I am building rustic themed cabinets and vanities for a cabin, and this lumber fit the bill perfectly. The knots and dings add the needed character perfectly. The wood is a great price, and is easy to work with. You will need to do a little digging to find good straight boards, but that is pretty standard.

However, I found it difficult to find relatively straight-edged boards that were not bowed. I must have rejected 20-25 boards before I found three that I could use. If it were my store, I would not label these boards "Premium."
