There are no domestic softwoods suitable for ground contact. Some are better than others. But, eventually, they will all rot.

How much would I need for 800 sq ft? How many grade 2 cedar 1X8X12?

A lot will depend on just how much cutting and trimming you're going to have to do. To cover 800 sq. ft., between 960 and 1000 board feet will do, about 125 pieces.

What is the country of origin

Western Red Cedar, also known as Coastal Cedar, is generally found growing west of the mountains in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. Note that there is also an Inland Red Cedar that is the same species but grows east of the Coast Range. Since it grows in a different climate and the soil is not the same, it is slightly different even though it is the same species. Coastal Cedar is generally sold green and Inland Cedar is normally kiln dried.

What is the finish size of this board?

Answers

The size can vary. If you are matching existing stock, you need to be careful. The actual net size of a piece of 1 x 8" that is surfaced four sides (S4S) according to the National Lumber Grading Authority is 23/32" x 7-1/4". When you leave one face rough, it can be thicker. depending on what the mill starts with, it can be 3/4", 13/16" or even 7/8". And that, of course, is if you're talking about an actual piece of lumber that was sawn rough at the mill as a piece of 1 x 8". Many mills will remanufacture 2 x 8" dimension lumber to make 1 x 8 that is S1S2E (Surfaced one side two edges). They start with a piece of S4S 2 x 8" the standard S4S net size being 1-1/2 x 7-1/4" and uniformly resaw it. The net result is 1-1/2" minus the center saw kerf which can be from 1/8 of 3/16 of an inch. So, you end up with a thinner board that is either 11/16 or 23/32 inch thick.

Can this board be used to make cedar planks for grilling food?

Asked by GrillGuy May 28, 2020
1
Answer

The short answer to your question is "YES." The cedar boards most commonly found in your local lumber yard are a #3 common & better Western Red Cedar. It is perfectly suitable to use to grill fish, beef, pork or vegetables on your BBQ. If you are new to this, you need to know that first the board should be soaked in water until it is saturated. Otherwise, it will quickly catch fire and you will lose whatever you are grilling. Second, when the coals are ready to use, put them to one side of the grill and place the board and meat to be grilled on the other side. Make sure that the grill is quite hot before you begin cooking. If you are cooking pork, make sure that it is done all the way through and is not pink in the middle.

Can these boards be painted? Or do they have to be stained?

Asked by Starnesman August 1, 2020
1
Answer

These cedar boards can be painted. A good blocking sealer-primer like Kilz or Zinsser should be used first.
