Where is this plane made?

Asked by Gouge December 29, 2014

The plane iron (blade) says Made in England. the iron probably came from the tool steel works around Sheffield. I didn't notice a country of origin for the rest of it. It's possible the whole thing was made in England, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was assembled in China. Stanley used to be made in the USA, but the plant in Shelbyville, TN has been closed for decades.

Bought it because it wasn't $200+ like veritas or wood river etc. Returned one and got another, both had issues and after talking to stanley directly, their response was that manufacturing flaws are either a) acceptable or b) just return it and try again. Be prepared to resurface and flatten the sole (bottom) and the sides. Spur for cutting wood fibers may or may not sit proud of the side face. Spur is made of soft metal. Bottom fence was not 90 degrees to the sole and according to Stanley "may not be". It really should. Fence required serious sanding to flatten. With a fair amount of work it will work fine, just be prepared for a few hours of sanding and little to no available parts from the mfg. As a comparison, i got an 80 year old one that was super rusty for $20 w shipping and it will require half the work because its surfaces are flat and true. Just FYI.

This plane works. The iron sharpened up razor sharp on an oilstone. The knicker works properly on cross-grained cuts. If used properly, it left me a clean and square rabbet. I took off a star for a few minor things. The paint is not great, the hole for the guide bar was bit cleaned out properly when they cut the threads, and there is a very minimal outward bow at the tip of the fence, but it does not affect performance. If you are having trouble finding a complete vintage plane like i was, i would recommend this one. This is much easier to set up than my stanley 45, and niyw i can use the 45 for other tasks.

Needs some work
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The blade is pretty sharp out of the box and after minimal honing and flattening you can make some nice shavings. Tuning this plane took some work though. I had to spend about twenty minutes flattening the sole and about ten on each side. Not bad. The fence doesn't ride perfectly square but with some work I fixed that problem. I didn't have any issues with the spur but the screw could be a little easier to deal with. The weight is good and it feels comfortable in my hand. Bottom line, after some tuning this plane is a solid tool. I'll still keep my eyes out for a vintage one that I can restore but until that time, I have enjoyed using it.

Tuning, flattening required as described by others. But whenever I buy a new tool I like to get an extra blade. My blade was humpbacked so took forever to flatten. Just one reason I wanted a spare blade. Fence was sloppy and fence rod does not appear to be hardened adequately. Depth stop is ok but will require some file work to get it to ride solidly in its slot. When I called 1 day after getting my plane to buy an extra blade I was told the blades are discontinued. In fact I was told the plane itself is discontinued. I bought several of the spurs as they are still available. Shipping was crazy expensive for something which could be shipped in an envelope. Generally disappointed with this Stanley tool but I'll make it work. Was thinking of getting a set of the sweetheart chisels but I became concerned they will require too much work up front and spent my money elsewhere.

Iron is of the low quality Stanley produces modernly. Rest isn’t much different to older Stanley’s. So, it’s ok if one can figure a way to replace the iron.
