Questions & Answers

I am trying to make a fold down table would this work? Plus i either want to paint or stain it. Thoughts?

Asked by: Kal
Not suitable for stain although I just give it three coats of poly for use as shop projects. and it looks good. As a table? Well, for occasional use as an extra dining table at Thanksgiving, sure. it will need to be framed to stiffen it. As a piece of good furniture... not a chance. Too soft, no figure.

Can this be uses to make kitchen cabnets?

Asked by: Csmith
I put new doors on all of my kitchen cabinets using this product, since my old ones were 1/2 inch thick, this worked well with the old hinges. Home Depot cut the doors for me, using my measurements that I drew out on graft paper. Keep in mind the grain of the wood when drawing up the cut pattern for the 4 x 8 sheet. If the grain will show, then all doors should be vertical, I painted mine, so it didn't matter. I also bought the trim from Home Depot that you see above the cabinets and installed it. The Home Depot paint is G48 satin, Pale Pistachio, Granny Smith White and Iced Green Grape. I used a sanding sealer (water based), glued my cutouts with Titebond II wood glue. After painting, I white washed the doors and applied satin Polyurethane water based, by Varathane. Everything was purchased from Home Depot. Since my theme was country French, I bought white ceramic knobs.

What is the weight of this 1/2" sheet of plywood? I'm building a pull out pantry and the drawer slides have a weight limit of 150#,!It'd be a shame for the weight of my lumber to restrict how much groceries I can put on the shelves!!
Asked by: chuck
My application is similar, pull-out drawers for a pantry. I used this material to divide the pantry vertically. I installed shelf standards on both sides of the divider so that shelves with drawers can be adjusted separately. The material is aesthetic pleasing, but not good enough for drawers holding heavy objects. The internal cores are very soft and do not hold screws well. The 1/2 inch screws will strip out very easily. For the drawers, I exchanged the Sande Plywood for Baltic Birch plywood. The Baltic Birch plywood is at least twice as heavy as the Sande Plywood, maybe more and will hold screws much better. Only $8 additional cost per sheet, but better insurance that it won't fall apart.

However there was a nasty stink to it that wasnt noted at the store. Once I got it inside t home it became noticable. The next day my whole garage smelled bad.. I am painting it so am hoping that the smell can be covered.. This project is for a customer of mine.. we will see how this all plays out..

Building a light weight Corn Hole Game for my daughter-in-law and decided to go with 1/2 inch instead of 3/4 inch like the other boards I have made. Went shopping at Home Depot and came across these boards. Both sides looked good and while it had voids, they were not something I couldn't work around. This is light weight material, easy to move and work with and pardon the expression, flat as a board. My second picture show it inlaid into a frame made of 1 x 4s. If you are looking for perfection, there might be better boards out there, but these come pretty close.

After cutting it to size, beveling the edges and sanding them to insure I had no splinters I was able to apply sealing coats to both sides within the afternoon. I payed extra but it was well worth it

Structurally not strong to hold up to glueing and nailing. Crew had already cut it up otherwise i would have brought it back to return it. Overpriced for what quality it had to offer.

I asked the Home Depot employee if he had seen that before, he wasn't sure. (?) The cord/string was hanging out, so he pulled it, and ripped through a layer of laminate.

I should have spent a little more and bought the maple plywood, the outer layer of veneer is not bonded well to the core. All cross cuts need to be scored through the first layer to get chip free edges. Disappointing product.
