Can this product be used in a bathroom behind a toilet?

Asked by: Paul
Yes we used it in 2 bathrooms do not confuse it with the MDF board of the same style, it must be made of PVC. type material, We have it in one of our baths for over 10 years and it is still holding up great, very easy to install.

14 sq. ft. Cape Cod MDF Beadboard Planks (3-Pack) is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 75.

First, this is manufactured wood (MDF), which is fairly delicate. Be careful when handling, as you can easily dent the edges or chip the "beads." Use a fine-tooth saw blade when trimming and shaping. The primer coat is good, but can chip. Make sure to actually paint it! Depending on your batch, the planks may fit together easily, or put up a fight. Have a 6x1x3 scrap board handy; place the long edge against the plank edge and carefully tap it with a hammer to ease it in when necessary. This helps prevent damaging the tongue. The instructions say you must paint these first before installation, but that will make it more difficult! I had excellent results installing-then-painting, making sure I didn't install the planks too tightly together (only about 1/32" to 1/16" expansion room per plank). This is not raw material, so the primer coat effectively protects the MDF from absorbing moisture from your paint and expanding.

I had hoped the other reviews were wrong, the ones that mentioned how difficult the product was to work with and getting the tongue and groove together. How hard could it be? I mean I have remodeled several homes now, done everything from plumbing and electrical to tile and hardwood. I did my entire cabin in tongue and groove pine planks. I did two bedrooms in tongue and groove wainscoting. The reviews had to be user error or first time DIY'ers. Nope. I bought this product, unloaded it all into the room I was using it in, let it acclimate for a few days, and then went to install it. First piece went on great, walls were square and I was ready to put the next piece on. I spent over 30 minutes on the second piece trying to get the tongue and groove together. No sooner did I get part of the pieces together would one end pop out. I finally gave up. I ripped the first piece of the wall and lugged all 20 packages back down to my truck to return tomorrow. Sure this is lower cost and pre-primed product, but I'd still be ahead of the curve to use the real pine planks and prime and paint them instead of this. My time has value, too. I've never once written a negative review for a product, but this product deserved it. Absolute garbage. Save yourself the headache and pick a different product.

Bought for a side of a pantry cabinet. Need I more pc to complete the job. I had to buy the whole package for that 1 pc.

I purchased the planks to replace oak paneling around the back side of my cabinets. I was planning to install against the cabinet framing but figured out that the planks need be nailed/glued to a solid surface. So I first installed ¼” door skin over the framing. Also I purchased the base and top molding kit that goes with the planks but decided to install my own molding. I did used the base molding to keep the planking straight and at the same height during the installation and I highly suggest using the base molding for the install even if you plan to use different base molding. The planks are easily installed but make sure you use a level after each plank is inserted. We painted the planking and the finish product looked fantastic. It says to leave a 1/32” gap between the planks but I just inserted each plank and bumped the new piece against the previous piece until snug. I definitely recommend this product.

I had used a similar product several years ago which looked the same, but was much higher quality. I didn't realize what junk this was. The older product was finished on both sides and was a synthetic material, not MDF. This current product is probably ok to use if you manage to find undamaged packages. EVERY SINGLE package had damaged tongues or grooves. Unfortunately, this was found after I had cut each package in half to 48 inches. The older product did not need painting. This one definitely does. I sure wish I had noticed the change. Sadly, the packaging is unchanged so I thought I was buying the old one. Shame on me for not looking more closely. Shame on HD for carrying such junk.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY WARNING! Do not buy this product. It does not slip together as easily as advertised. You will find yourself very frustrated trying to use the tongue and groove because that part of the construction is made of flimsy cardboard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from INSANE OVER THIS LOVE IT Folks it is not that expensive and what you pay for it, it looks awesome. Ran it horizontally to get a shiplap look and achieved it 100%. Painted it with Behr CEILING white paint, wanted a flat finish and all paints with the added primer will not give you that wood/flat look. Did NOT caulk where you locked it in nor paint that or other grove so the lines would stand out and get a maximum real board/plank look. Have French Country design and it totally works. Master Bathroom, ceiling (primed back) 1/2 way down walls and bottom the wainscot HD sells in 3X4 sheets. Entrance same except ceiling, added behind white slip covered C&B sofa, DR behind fireplace and a few other places for design. Did not go wall to wall only used the 8ft length and on each side ran the panel down (vertical) the sides. It totally rocks and easy to do. IF you prime any of the back, do not get it in the groves so its easy to attach to another piece. Should post pictures, but still busy on projects. Go for it, plaster walls are so boring and add crown molding with this I think is a must.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I wanted to install wainscoting on several walls that had many windows, outlet boxes, etc. to cut... I wanted to install wainscoting on several walls that had many windows, outlet boxes, etc. to cut around and feared my limited woodworking skills were not up to dealing with this using 4' wide beaded panels. I thought using 6" wide planks would make this easier and I think I was right. I've made lots of cuts to get around things and have only ruined 2 planks, and even then I could use a portion of them for shorter areas. A number of reviews complain of the groove being too narrow to accept the tongue and I did run into that problem. Fortunately it has an easy fix. After encountering this problem, I looked around my shop for something to widen the groove a bit. I noticed the metal blade on my combination square appeared about the same width as the tongue on the planking. Before installing a plank I gently run the metal blade down the groove a couple of times. This removes any sawdust trapped in the groove and widens it the width of the blade. After doing that every piece of planking worked, though I often tapped it into place using a piece of scrap wood on the opposite side and a hammer. The metal blade of the combination square measured about 2mm wide. I've had a number of these combination squares over the years and the blades all looked roughly the same in thickness, so this will probably work for anyone who has a combination square in their toolbox. The planking itself is about 6mm wide with the 2mm groove cut in it. MDF is kind of fragile so you need to use some care if you use my tip to avoid breaking the material the forms the groove. I'm guessing the groove was cut properly in the factory, but in the process of packaging and shipping it frequently gets crushed down a bit. Maybe a different style of packaging would protect the groove better, but if you have a metal blade about 2mm thick and a little patience, it's not that big of a problem.
