They are designed for a hollow core door with 1/4" thick plywood, and push beyond into the hollow space. Further, the dimples that hold the pull in place are set for 1/4" plywood. If you used them for 1/8" hardboard, they would likely move up and down in the hole a bit. Certainly they would noticably protrude on the other side of the hardboard.
