They are about 1/4" - 5/16" deep.
They are designed for a hollow core door with 1/4" thick plywood, and push beyond into the hollow space. Further, the dimples that hold the pull in place are set for 1/4" plywood. If you used them for 1/8" hardboard, they would likely move up and down in the hole a bit. Certainly they would noticably protrude on the other side of the hardboard.

I used a flat kitchen knife to dislodge the old finger pulls on three sides and it popped off by itself. Then I popped in the new ones. You may need to use a hammer to get them solidly in the door. It took me 15 seconds.
