Hi ca. Thank you for your question. With regular care, it will take about 4 to 5 years for your Japanese Holly to reach its full height and width. This is a part sun shade shrub that likes an acidic soil. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC

Yes, a 3 gallon container contains a more mature plant which is much larger. But it is still only one plant.

I have the one gallon size do I need to add anything before I plant like plant soil or put the protector sheet down fert

Answer

No protector sheet, but some mulch is good.

Answer

That will somewhat vary due to the conditions they are planted in, but at maturity they would likely reach about 2-3 feet deep.

If I order this product, would they delivered at my house? What's the actual size of it?

Asked by Oscar September 4, 2017

Yes they deliver to your house. They will only be about 8" when delivered.

These are bushes and they could take up to 4-5 years to reach their mature height. I have read some that say they have seen them grow as much as 2' in a single year, but most say they will grow about half that until the reach varying heights of 6'-10'.

Answer

This plant will perform well in a planting that is 3 gallons or larger. You will want to up size the container every 2 years or so to make your your plant does not get choked and root bound.

When I ordered them, I knew they would be small. The upside to this is that I didn't have to dig very deep to get them planted. The downside is that they are going to take 2-3 years before they get to the height I would like them at. They came healthy and I even left them in the planter for about 2 weeks prior to planting them and they remained healthy looking throughout that time. I only planted them about a week ago and they look like they are doing great so far. I am posting a picture now and I will try to remember to post another in about 90 days, if there is change.

The beautiful Holly.
I bought 2 of these plants for Christmas 2014 from the local Home Depot, and planted them on both sides of my garage after the holidays. They look pretty, and healthy. I hope they will be there for many years to come.

The boxes were standing vertical instead of horizontal. Consequently the plants were sitting on top of each other and crushed. After separating, I had to cut off many branches which left most bushes about 3 to 4” tall. Other than that, the plants themselves were healthy and survived planting.

looking for a boxwood look a like without all of the disease issues that boxwoods have. I very much like the look and, while it is a slow grower (6" per year), i think they work out awesome. I purchased 3. based on what I expect by end of next summer, I would expect to purchase about 25 more and replace out my 'bad' looking boxwoods.

Ordered 34 of these and they came straight from the nursery. I was expecting huge boxes but they came in five boxes with six and two boxes with two. One of the two plant boxes apparently opened during shipping since the plants weren't in there the same as the other. Each plant was exactly as expected and healthy. I was starting to dig the holes for them when the delivery person showed up so perfect timing. Took me about 4 hours to get them all planted into the ground and connected to the drip line. I should have put them on half gallon drippers since one gallon is too much when I have trees on the same line and they need longer watering times. It's been 2 and a half weeks now and just about every plant is showing growth. Each one is still healthy!
