CAN THIS PLANT GROW IN ZONE 5

Asked by LULU June 9, 2020

Answers

Yes, it will grow in zone 5, but there's no guarantee it will thrive. They are heat-loving evergreens, and, because the gardenias are native to tropical Africa, and are best grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Cold hardy gardenias are available in commerce, but that doesn't guarantee zone 5 gardenia shrubs. The supplier can probably advise of care for colder seasons specific to this shrub, but I'm hoping the fact that it is a "frost-proof" variety means you will have greater success than others.

Would this climb a trellis or is it more for shrubbery

It is more for shrubbery. It can be quite stout and gives a nice bush.

I actually have mine doing quite well in a container. The original palnt I received as about 10 inches at its tallest, and I planted it in a 12 inch pot.

Is this plant deer and rabbit resistant? Thank you, Kathy

Deer-resistant shrubs do not have to be plain looking. ... Another deer-resistant shrub with showy flowers is “Frostproof” gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides “Frostproof”). The problem with the rabbit issue is that when they are hungry enough, they chew through just about anything. When I used to live in that neck of the woods, I found that the fragrant plants confused them a bit, but no guarrantees there. Hope this helps.

As it is cold here I watched for the delivery and brought it in right away. Put it in an area where it gets good light, etc. as it was a bit wilted looking. Right now, all the leaves are dry and dead looking. There is still some 'give' in the branches but I am not sure the plant will make it. I think I should get either a refund or preferably a replacement.

The plant arrived ahead of schedule. The packaging was excellent, with the shrub's pot protected by a plastic bag, closed to minimize any soil loss during transit. On receipt, I immediately unpacked it, planted it in a clay 12 in thick-walled square pot with Scotts potting soil. I used my fingers to gently separate the roots to encourage it to spread. After watering it in thoroughly, it is now in a sunny spot on my back patio. I have been watering it consistently and, fingers crossed that it continues on this path, it seems to be enjoying its new home. I am so thrilled, and hope to purchase more items from this nursery and from Home Depot in the future.
