Product Overview

The Japanese Boxwood is a reliable broadleaf evergreen selection with beautiful and petite light green leaves. This is a classic choice for pruning into sharp-edged box hedges and topiaries. Left untrimmed, it has a naturally rounded growth habit and reaches 6-8 ft. tall and 10-15 ft. wide. Deer problems? The Japanese Boxwood is one of the least desirable snacks around for deer! This variety is hardy from USDA Zones 6-9 (between -10 to 0°F) once fully established in your landscape. It grows well in Full Sun to Partial Shade. Plant in average garden soil with good drainage. Water 2-3 times per week for the first growing season. Fertilize in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. These boxwoods are well-rooted in a 2.5 Qt. pot and tend to range from 7-12 in. tall.

Hi Billy this is Nick in Milwaukee. First these types of plants are slow growing but cover and hide well utility materials. If you plant each one about 2.5 to 3 feet apart they will eventually meet together (You will be able to count your plants with that spacing). If you plant closer than that they may be a bit crowded when roots mature. I have always felt it is better to allow some extra space to get healthy growth. Don't forget this is not a quick growth plant but once it gets to the full height and trimmed to your own style they are a nice expression of groomed topiary. They stay green in the snow too for most of the winter. I have a 82' foot long section and planted each one almost 3 feet apart and after the 3rd year they to began fill very nicely that was 14 years ago so they are really thick now and I trim them in a long box shape. Some people take pictures of them since they hold their shape so perfect. Don't forget to water well especially the first two years and in the summers. But don't over water. Fertilize at least twice a year. Don't let the fertilize touch the roots or leaves or they will show a browning effect, sort of put the fertilizer in a ring around the plant. If you burn them a little they will come back so don't worry. just don't over do it. Good luck. Nick P. Milwaukee, WI

No.

Will this plant do well in sandy soil? Not actual sand, but soil that has a lot of sand and drains quickly.

How many do i need for 13 feet ?

Answer

That all depends on how your maintain them, each plant if untrimmed will grow 6-8 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide. If you are planning to trim them into a hedge, plant the boxwoods 2-3 feet apart and trim them as needed. Mike

How many plants will i need to cover 25 feet lenght in my backyard

Spacing of bowood is usually 2-3 feet apart spending on the type. So each plant will usually have a tag with spacing recommendations. Simply do the math calculations that way. Happy planting!! Note: Winter Gem (siempre viernes) is a variety that can grow high 4 feet or more and can also get quiet wide. Here is a link (http://www.homenursery.com/blog/bid/328704/green-velvet-boxwood-vs-winter-gem-boxwood-comparison) to two types of boxwood. The winter gems usually have a faster growth rate but your choice depends on if you like the softer green color or a shinier bright green. Also topiary purpose plays a role in your selection. Go online and view some of the various types of uses for boxwood search under "boxwood topiary."

I ordered 6 of these, and they all arrived in absolutely perfect condition. the plants are big and healthy, and they were packaged really well with nice and moist soil upon arrival despite being in transit for about a week. The plants I got are all about 1.5 ft in height from top of planter. I highly recommend them.

Plants arrived healthy and on time. However, they were tiny. When I returned them, I noticed that the store had the same shrub at the same price but nearly three times the size. From now on, I'll pick out plants in the store.

Shrubs delivered in a timely manner, well packaged and healthy. They were planted a few days after receipt and already have new growth started after 2 weeks in the ground. Plants much healthier than at local store due to string of hot weather.
