Questions & Answers

Can this be used to apply Thompsons Waterseal protector?

I need to seal a small wooden bird (yard art)
Asked by: SushBreath
If the wood is smooth then this will work. However because it is a foam applicator, it can catch or snag on any rough spots. A 2in natural bristle brush would be a good option as well. Thanks,

Can this be used with Spray paint

Asked by: Cocoabean918
If you are referring to using this brush to "smooth out" spray paint once it's been applied, that would not be recommended. This foam brush is safe to use with latex or oil based paints, but brushing over a sprayed coating is generally not recommended. Thanks,

What is this foam made out of? My toddler was playing with a new one and broke out in a rash. Are they latex foam?

Asked by: Jason
Yes - they are made from latex foam.

2 in. Flat Foam Brush is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than others I am a furniture maker. I have used foam brushes for applying stain, sealers and top coat for years. I recently picked up a handful of these 2” foam brushes. I have been accustomed to buying in bulk packages. These are so much better. More even coverage equivalent to some of my most expensive brushes. Light pressure and don’t overload with finish.

There are many things I still purchase from Home Depot, despite their continuous decline in the quality of their products over the years and these are a perfect example. They are cheap Chinese pieces of you know what and will fall apart after the first 5-10 minutes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Zero Cleanup Required I use these brushes for all my poly and stain applications. It's so nice not to bother with cleanup when applying anything oil-based! Plus, they wash out much more quickly than a bristle brush if you're using a water based paint/primer/poly. I've never had any issue with these brushes leaving bits of foam behind in whatever I'm applying either. The reason I took a star off is because the brushes do need a little more internal support when applying thick materials like pond liner epoxy. I found that I needed to brace the back of the brush with a gloved finger during my last project, after the foam had become saturated and heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Little Foam Miracles I really wish I would have used a foam brush when I started refinishing my cabinets. I was a big believer in the expensive, natural bristle brushes like Purdys, etc. After applying the paint and one coat of ploy with bristles, I switched over to a .77-cent foam brush for the final coat of satin Minwax. It was LIKE GLASS. Why had I wasted my time cleaning with mineral spirits, soap and water only to buy more brushes?! These foam miracles deserve more credit. The only tip worth sharing is to keep your dipping on the light side.. the amount of liquid a foam brush holds is far more than a bristle brush- helps to avoid drips. Best part about this product? If the application is water-based, wash it in .2 seconds under a warm faucet, dry it out and it's good as new! If it's oil-based - throw em' out after each coat without feeling like you've killed a horse tail.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for I bought a few of these foam brushes to paint small color sample swatches on the drywall in our house. I don't suggest using them on big projects, but, for small-purpose/rough tasks, they're perfect. What's more, for $0.72 each, they're way more cost-effective than buying even the cheapest of paintbrushes.

As a novice at painting and staining, I was willing to tackle a very small job: Apply Miniwax's stain and polyurethane (Polyshades) to the wood surfaces of two small chairs (A small "manageable" project). About half way through, the sponge of the 2-inch foam came off of the brush handle. Assuming it was just a defective tool, I began using the 1-inch foam brush. Within 20 minutes, the foam came off of this brush handle as well. I learned my lesson: "These brushes aren't even fit for a small job." I don't know if all foam brushes from all manufacturers (or even this manufacturer ) are so consistently poor, but it's not worth the risk for me to ever try again. I recommend that you only purchase these poorly-made brushes at your own peril.
