Questions & Answers

How many inches on center is 2×4's supposed to be, when putting studs up for building a wall? Thank you very much Shane

Asked by: Bossma1976
16" typically but 16" or 24" but remember to burn (deduct) 3/4" at beginning of your layout and to make your walls straight you'll need to crown your studs and don't forget to plumb and line your walls to keep them as straight as possible.

Which wood best for raised gardens?

Im looking to start raised gardens in my back yard. It is south facing but im unsure about which wood to use.
Asked by: Bill
It's not "wood" but you might consider a plastic or composite lumber. No rot, insects, or chemical leaching.

As a builder, my customers expect me to build them quality and long lived projects, but using H.D. lumber makes this difficult at best. I have to pick through many, many pieces of "Premium" to find relatively straight and better than average quality pieces. After I get them to my job site, some percentage of those warp, etc. and I am left with several pieces to return. Home Depot used to sell a truly premium stud and although it cost more, it was worth it and I wished it was still available. I believe that although more effort, I will have to return to ordering lumber from a lumber supplier. I have addressed this issue in many receipt surveys, for many months, with no response and nothing has changed in the store. I cannot put my name on a product that is not as good as the effort I invest in creating with it.

Not sure if it's because I got the studs delivered but almost every single one was twisted or bowed to the point where I couldn't use it. I will never buy lumber from home Depot again unless I actually pick it out myself. It was like they saved all the worst pieces for my order.

There were a lot of defective wood(split, cracked, holes, chunks taken off) depending on what your doing and how picky you are. If I didn't have to take time going through all the wood i i would give it 5 stars. Also depends on the batch, some have dew defects while others have a lot. Note: if you buy your wood in winter its cheaper, seen it drop over a dollar per wood. So if you can plan ahead buy it then. Also be careful how you store because it does warp and bend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Workbench project (8/2/17) I bought 9 of these for a workbench that i wanted to build. From what I read, most negative reviews come from people buying this in bulk, and I totally understand that. If you don't need that many pieces you definitely need to go through several of these to pick out the right ones, checking for cracks and other imperfections. If they look good then I check for straightness. I do this by placing them flat on the floor and checking if there's gaps between the wood and the floor. Do this for all 4 sides and you have a perfectly straight piece.

I had to buy about 15 pieces to make some basement shelving and the first few I picked up were nice and light and straight but as I kept pulling some were noticeably heavier and moist. I'm not sure if they throw it in the kiln dryer in a stack and the middle doesn't get dry but I noticed the pieces on top were much dryer than the middle. overall my shelves came out great.

Had to dig through various different boards as 50% of them were warped and bent (still in-store). I bring one out today and it isn't even usable it is so warped. Last time I ever buy anything from THD again, worst lumber I've ever purchased. Waste of my time to go all the way over there, buy their product, load it and unload it, then not even be able to use it a few months later.
