Questions & Answers

Construction Select vs Outdoor Select

What is the difference between the two types of pressure-treated lumber? I am putting down an outdoor deck.
Asked by: Udub68
Construction grade is incised to help penetrate the preservative, appearance grade is not and should only be used above ground. I have found that appearance grade can have a tendency to sometimes rot so a good preservative should be applied on horizontal deck boards after installation.

I replaced my entire 40'x 21' deck spending a few thousand $. Did this last August and within a few weeks used a top brand stain/sealer. The water would bead up so I know the stain did its job, but a year later the deck looks like crap. 95% of the boards have splits and cracks in them and 35% of the boards have warped. Spend the money and go with a quality cedar. This wood is poorly treated and is sadly inferior.

Broken, warped, damaged, and aesthetically unacceptable pieces. 22/24 12x6 deck board were unacceptable. 10 of the 10x6 were unacceptable. And it seems the 12x6 are smaller (1/16-1/8”), width wise, than the 10x6 deck boards!! Which causes problems when altering boards.

After getting it home I found it was a little warped and had a bow to it that makes it unlikely to be used for its intended project. Quality of material was fine. I will have to do a better job picking out longer lumber in the future. As this piece was for a foundation and now most likely will be cut into other projects .
