Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

Balusters & Spindles

Treated balusters are used not only for safety and strength, but they also aid in creating a custom look to your railing project.

Pressure-Treated Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe, and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.
  • California residents
  • Made of southern yellow pine
  • Ground Contact treated lumber can be used in both Above Ground and Ground Contact exterior applications
  • Backed by a lifetime limited warranty against termite infestation and rot

  • #2 grade lumber has few defects, knots are well-spaced and do not exceed the size regulations.
  • Ideal for a variety of general uses including exposed structures, sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications
  • Uniform thickness, density and appearance for stable and long lasting performance
  • Hot-dip galvanized fasteners are recommended
  • Individual pieces of pressure treated lumber will reference Ground Contact on the end tag
  • No two pieces of lumber are the same.
  • Color, grain pattern and texture will vary as well.
  • Prime grade lumber is the perfect choice if appearance is the main concern with your lumber project
  • Prime grade lumber has fewer knots and an overall better appearance

How many will I need for a deck that is 14x17

Asked by Jackie June 22, 2020

Answer

Figuring you lay the boards along the 14 ft length. 7 1/4" width of board plus 1/4" gap between boards. I come up with 28 boards. If you have a 3/8" gap between boards, I come up with 27 boards.

will these be good for rafters?

Asked by james June 18, 2020

Answer

Depending on the span length, 2*8’s are okay for rafters. You should not use pressure treated Wood inside your house. Use regular spruce for interior framing.

Can this wood be used to make a door jam.

Asked by Ben September 13, 2019

It can but it is not usually used for that. This is mainly used for areas that are going to be contacting the ground. You can use a regular prime lumber for a door jamb and just be sure to paint it where it will be subjected to the outdoor weather. You can also stain and seal it. The treated lumber will not take any paint or stain until it has had time to dry out and even then paint has a tendency to peel because of the treatment. I hope this helps you out. Good Luck. Dwayne

Should this be stained if you are going to use it for decking and if so should you use a product like restore?

Asked by Dougthebuilder June 25, 2019

Answer

Although pressure-treated lumber is protected against rot (fungal decay) and termites, periodic maintenance must be performed to maximize protection against weathering. This maintenance will let you enjoy your new outdoor project for many years. Use the water test to see if it’s time to seal (or re-seal). Drizzle some water onto the wood. If the water beads, the wood is still sealed and protected. If the water is absorbed into the wood within a few seconds, it’s time to apply a sealer.

This lumber is treated with Micronized Copper Azole (MCA). Please check the end tag to make sure you are buying lumber that is treated to ground contact.

I placed an online order, delivered, so I was not able to choose my boards, the ones selected by Home Depot had many knots in it, one had some rot at the end of the board. Another one was not straight. The wood was already late for the project so I did the best I could with it.

Used to replaced the floor of my 16' trailer. You have to look through to get the boards you want but overall there was not many I passed on. The wood is usually still wet when purchased so you have to let it dry if you don't want gaps after assembly.
