Questions & Answers

Sand is needed, but desciption says sand is not needed?

From the several questions I've read on here it, it is still instructed to use at least a 1/2" base of sand beneath these base panels, however, per the description from the home depot website is states directly: "Each lightweight panel replaces 200 lbs. (5 bags) of the traditional stone base and sand, so it eliminates the need to dig out 4 in. - 5 in. of dirt and fill it in with heavy bag base." - that description implies that all that is required is to dig out grass in the desired area, make sure it is completely tampered down and level, then install the paver base panels and then the desired pavers on top. Is sand required or not/are these actually only to be used to replace the gravel then?
Asked by: KTK
As a professional installer I have not used these panels yet, but am doing some research. On the sand question.....The Interlocking Concrete Paver Institute standard for pavers is 1" to 1.5" of bedding sand. This product is claiming to only need a half inch underneath or an optional 1/2" also above each panel. If you were to eliminate the 1/2" above you are using less sand, but not removing the need for all of it. Sand is needed, but so is the requirement for perfect grading of the soils. As a professional installer we don't worry about the occasional hole caused by rocks removed in the subgrade. We fill those holes with qp or gravel, and never, ever, return soil to the excavation area or attempt to compact loose soils. It seems this product would actually be harder to use, for us anyway, in an attempt to get the base so perfectly flat and graded for water runoff with the rocky soil conditions we deal with daily which leaves an uneven soil base surface, even when using the most accurate excavation practices.

I have an 18 foot diameter circle of sand where I removed and above ground pool this year. Can I lay these panels on top

Asked by: Joe
Thank you for the replies. We didn't have the pool installed, so I don't know what's under there, am assuming the base is whatever's required to install a pool properly. All I see is sand, but haven't determined its depth and what's underneath it. I was looking for a quick and dirty temporary solution, but have to bite the bullet and pay a professional paver.

Can these support 2000 lbs of water in a 6’x10’ kiddie pool, on a paver patio?

Asked by: Dantheman
Yes you can absolutely use these panels, since the weight is equally distributed over the entire bottom surface.

Way too expensive in my opinion, however, these bases made my DIY paver project SO MUCH EASIER. We have a cement slab we wanted to cover and extend. The original plan was to only use the bases for the extension, but after laying pavers just in sand that was put over the cement slab, we found spacing was more difficult, some pavers would rock when stepped on, and I was constantly "fixing" the sand before laying every single stone. Finally gave up, picked up the pavers we had lain, and spent the money for more paver base panels to cover the slab. Best decision. The pavers sit perfectly level, tight together, laid a heck of a lot faster, and the patio is lovely. It was more than we wanted to spend, but we found the extra cost to be worth it with the final results.

With the traditional method of laying pavers you can adjust each for level as you go. Using these pads doesn't allow you to do this. The claim is that you can use a shallower sand bed but I really doubt this does much of anything to help that. Also, they are very expensive for a sheet of Styrofoam. Save your money and just use more sand.

They are fairly expensive but they can make a job go faster and unlike sand or paver base they really seem to hold the pavers in place. For my project I used 16" x 16" pavers. with these on top of existing concrete for a front porch. Seemed like a good way to go.

Positive- the product is easy to get home and is easy to rework the layout of the pavers since there's no sand to move underneath. Easy on your back. Negative- Feels a bit pricey. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved time and my back Used these as the base for ~200 sq. ft. patio with 16" concrete pavers. I did the project mostly by myself and the panels saved 1-2 weekends of additional digging and transferring hundred of pounds of gravel base. These are extremely lightweight, yet sturdy, and were very easy to use. The one thing is that when you use larger pavers, you must be extremely careful leveling with sand (any uneveness will cause the pavers to rock). After six months (and half of a NJ winter) the patio has stayed firmly in place and still feels very solid.

That is the main reason why I gave 4/5 stars. As far as installation and handling ease, that went well. The individual panels are very light. They are easy to measure and cut (I used a box cutter). Score them as you would a piece of Plexiglas, put the cut edge against a table edge (for support), and apply pressure to each side. It was harder getting the surface underneath level/smooth than it was laying these panels. Time will tell whether the completed project will remain in place and level.

It probably halved the amount of digging we would have had to do, so despite the expense it was worth it. This was our first attempt at installing pavers and the job turned out perfect. The pavers installed perfectly on the base, and after sealing the joints with polymeric sand they are extremely solid. All in all, we'd use them again, although the cost is pretty outrageous. Would hate to think what these would add to the cost for a larger job.

A little pricey maybe, but the results were worth it for my project. I was retrofitting an existing "pavers on sand" sidewalk. I had to remove the pavers and underlying sand to get to an underlying drainage pipe. When I reassembled the paver walk, I wanted it to have better drainage (water will drain through these panels) and look better. So I replaced the sand and crushed gravel with slightly compacted pea gravel and these Base Panels. Much neater, more stable, and the pavers fit together better thanks to the more level and solid underlying Base surface. When you place pavers on the Base, they want to stay put, better than on compacted sand. If only they had been around when I constructed the (much larger) paver patio 10 years ago!

It could not possibly be better than traditional methods. Due to advancing age and wanting to do it myself I decided to try it. I laid a 40 ft. walkway with 16 in. pavers. It's been through a hot summer, cold winter and drenching spring rain and the blocks have not shifted, settled or heaved. I have to to give it a thumbs up.
