Q:Is it ok to drill holes in bottom of saucer as it?s holding too much water and causing root rot

Answer This Question

A:  We have that exact pot and did drill 3 holes. It is either that or lose plants. It worked well.

A:  Hi Michele, it sounds like you may have 1 or more clogged drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Otherwise, the excess water would simply overflow the saucer. Unfortunately, I can not say what your best course of action is as we recommend a layer of landscape fabric over the bottom of the planter and drainage holes, an approximate 2 inch layer of porous material(ie. rock), and then another layer of landscape fabric to prevent the pre-drilled drainage holes from getting clogged with wet compacted soil. You can drill another hole, or multiple, in the bottom exterior of the container to help relieve the water backup, and make sure it is low enough to still flow into the saucer, but if you only have soil in the bottom it's likely it could become compacted in the new drainage hole and cause the same issue again. If you drill into the saucer itself then you will negate the saucer function. Please reach back out with any additional questions.

Q:is this pot safe to plant citrus trees?

A:  Hi Bunny, Here's what I do know, I planted a small Japanese Maple in this planter and its doing well a year later. I even left the planter with the tree out over the winter and everything survived nicely! Seems like this could work for you!

      by|May 14, 2022

A:  Uncertain but a really nice pot

        by|May 15, 2022

A:  Hi Bunny, yes this Large Planter would be a great container for a Citrus tree. The one thing we stress with all of our planters, and especially this with the 4 pre-drilled drainage holes in the bottom, is take the necessary steps to ensure those holes do not get clogged and prevent proper drainage. For us this means using landscape fabric and rock to create a layer of rock protected on 2 sides by the fabric that will ensure a sufficient water flow out of the container. Please share images of your planted product if possible!

A:  Hi Bunny, I planted a Japanese Maple in this pot and even left the pot outside all winter and the Maple is doing fine. Just started with some buds for spring. I don't know what the requirements are or how different they are than the Japanese Maple, you may need different soil, feed, etc... Maybe read up a little more online to see what your plant's needs are and then just keep an eye on the watering, so it doesn't dry out in the pot, or drown. It's a good sized pot for a smaller tree and while its still heavy with dirt in it, you can actually still move it if you decided you want to, (something I couldn't do with other large pots.) I hope this helps. Best Regards to you and your Citrus Tree!

Q:Does it leach any toxic material from the resin? Is it safe to grow vegetables in the pot?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi STIT, thank you for the inquiry. This Planter does not cause leaching into the soil and therefore can be used for edibles if desired. As with all of our Planters, we recommend taking steps to ensure proper drainage. We recommend the following: 1) the addition of a layer of landscape fabric in the bottom of the planter to prevent the prevent the pre-drilled drainage holes from getting clogged, 2) then creating a porous layer using Rock of about 2-3 inches deep, 3) covering that layer with another layer of landscape fabric before pouring in the potting soil. We believe proper drainage in this planter will help create an optimum growing environment for the live goods and help the planter last for many years to come. One thing to keep in mind with this planter is that when planted the weight increases substantially, so if you do need to move it please know that dropping it will cause the Saucer to potentially fail. When planted moving this planter is a 2 person job and handle with care. Please don't hesitate to reach back out with any additional questions.

I purchased six of these pots with attached saucer and it was the best purchase I have made! I was looking for a large planter pot for six bougainvillea trees that had outgrown their pots and I needed something rather large and was unable to find any planters that would allow room for growth. My daughter saw these planter pots at the garden center at Home Depot and said, "I found it!". She immediately sent me pictures and video and we placed the order to be delivered next day. The order came in very early and the driver was professional and courteous. I have received numerous compliments from family and friends that have visited my home recently. They all thought it was a stone container and were surprised to find out it was resin. It's an incredible find and I highly recommend it!

                  water issue by viewer
I purchased this planter precisely one week ago and watered several times. no water issue from saucer. it might be helpful to line the bottom of pot with gravel which I did before filling with asstd empty water bottles so water doesn't collect on roots of my bouganvillea. hope this helps no matter what is planted inside! need 3 more pots hope I can get them!

This is beautiful. Only complaint I would have to say is that the base collects water and it can just sit there and grow algae and mosquitoes. Other than that, it’s perfect. I bought 6 to put around my pool.

Excellent product which should last a long time. Yucca or Agave plants go very well with this large container. Heavy with soil & plant inserted but still movable to a warmer location when Temperatures drop below 25 which will damage or kill the plant species considering the wind chill factor. Providing you own a sturdy hand truck dolly.

Good quality planter that holds up well.
I have 3 of these that I've had about 5 or 6 years. This is my 4th one. They have held up very well over that time (see pics with new one and old ones). They've lasted much better than some newer pots I have bought of the same size elsewhere which had some of the outer casing start to flake off. I've had none of that with these. Other than possibly some slight fading of the colors these older ones are in as good shape as when I bought them. I do store them out of the elements in the winter but they are out for 8 or 9 months of the year. On this new one it looks like they have actually improved them a bit. (unusual in this day and age) I believe the coating on the inside is heavier than it was on the older version. Nice. The others I picked up in the store whereas this one was shipped to my house. I was not sure what to expect but it was extremely well packaged and was in absolutely pristine condition. I'd dare say better condition than many you will find on the wire shelves in the store after they have been moved around there. These are big enough that you don't have to worry about the wind blowing them over no matter how windy it gets. I think one reviewer mentioned needing to drill a hole. That would be a mistake and defeat the purpose of the tray. If you look closely you will see 4 small holes going from the pot to the attached tray. They are not conspicuous but they serve the purpose. One of my older ones leaks a little out of the tray but that does not really bother me. It dries pretty fast in the southern heat. Mine are on a concrete patio and a little water on the patio is not something to pause at. I have a palm tree in this new one and it looks great. I also love that they are not so heavy they are hard to handle. That helps a lot when I store them in the winter.

                    Caveat Emptor: Saucer Leaks
What this IS.....and is NOT. This is NOT “Stone”, but a cast combo of crushed stone, fiberglass, resin (purportedly with internal matting reinforcement) and is much lighter than stone at 20.24 lbs (30.4 lbs box weight) and far easier to move. The packaging is stellar and the pot arrived unscathed. This is NOT waterproof. There is a black, sprayed-in waterproof coating and 3 pre-drilled drain-holes; liquid is caught by the integral saucer. The problem? The saucer is not sprayed with the waterproof coating and water leaks/leaches out the bottom (see photo). In other words, the saucer is useless (see photo). I wouldn’t describe the color as “ivory”, but a light terra-cotta. The design and surface-pitting makes for a handsome statement on any deck or patio. But, I consider this too high priced to have to contend with a leaky saucer.
