how do you use this tool do you just apply drywall mud first

Answer

After applying a texture to the wall or ceiling, usually with a texture sprayer, you drag the knife across the texture pattern to knock down the peaks. Techniques vary depending on the results you want. It is best to practice both the spraying and the knockdown on a test piece of drywall to get a feel for when to begin knocking down the texture and how much pressure to use.

This was a great knife. The handle is really thick and perfect for my large hands. It is a very sturdy handle, but not heavy. The knife blade is not as wide as my other knives, but is still flexible. While it may be designed for knock down use, it still works good to spread and level mud. The handle is held on by bolts and two wing nuts, which allows you to remove the handle for minimal storage. It is a great tool. At times you really need a longer knife.and this one is great.

As an avid DIY, I have occasion to repair or touch up finished ceilings during home remodeling projects. I’ve tried many techniques to approach the kind of finish the pro’s achieve with modest success. Recently I used this knockdown knife in lieu of a wide drywall knife to apply joint compound to a ceiling repair. Despite the poor stippling effect of other equipment that I also used in the process, I thought that the knife worked well to flatten the texture, and the 24” width helped to hide creases that would be caused by multiple passes of a shorter knife. It is lightweight and easy to handle when standing on a ladder or scaffold. It has a plastic handle that is easily gripped even with wet hands (see picture). Its narrow blade depth suggests it is best used for knockdown of a stippled ceiling, rather than the application of large amounts of compound to the ceiling. I applied the compound using drywall knives, then used texture brushes to create a stipple and finished by running this blade near the ceiling to “knock down” the stipple. I admit that it’s a difficult technique for many DIY’s to master, but this tool is capable if you are. The tool requires simple assembly using two small screws and wing-nuts (see picture) that are supplied. , It is easily disassembled again for compact storage. When properly assembled, the grooves on the handle will face away from the knife – in fact, the fasteners are designed of a length so that it is difficult to assemble the handle if it is facing inside-out (see picture). It cleans easily, and spreads a smooth, flatly surfaced compound. Nice tool. I would recommend it to others.

I am really happy with my 24 inch steel knock-down knife. What I like about this knife so much is that the steel has a light bit of give to it instead of being entirely rigid. I would have thought that would be a negative but after using it I found that it really helps to roll over slight imperfections and create a nice smooth finish with less mud. The handle is ergonomic enough, nothing great. The reach is just about right. Any longer and some control would be lost. Comes in two pieces but it couldn't be easier to assemble. Care needs to be taken as to not damage the knife because it is thin. Cleans up great.

I chose this 24 inch blue steel knock-down knife for my husband who is a drywaller and has been one for over 30 years, he said the blade is to thin and flimsy, and also when he attached the handle to the blade, the blade developed a bow in it. He also felt the blade should be longer and wider, it is about 2 inches and would be better if it were 3 or 4 inches and that the handle should have less of an angle to it.
