Are these an alternative to the metal clamping connectors for romex?

Answer

Thank you for your question. Yes, this part (Halex part 27515, 27516, and 75111B) is simply another way to connect non metallic sheathed cable to a metal box. The straight piece gets disconnected from the main part of the fitting. Snap the fitting into the box and run the NM cable through the fitting and into the box. The piece you pulled apart then gets pushed into the side of the fitting. This piece actually secures the wire and holds it in place. It serves the same purpose as the metal clamp connectors for NM cable. Its just another option.

The description states 2 nm cables. Will this work for 2 12awg nm cables?

Yes, the connectors will work for 2 12awg nm cables.

Though it says 3/8 connector, does it use a 3/8 knockout? ... or does it need a 1/2 knockout?

1/2" knockout

Is this connector installed from inside the box or from the outside?

Installed from outside the box.

What should you replace them with. Other options available?

The 27580 version I actually like better (even though it doesn't clamp as well). But these are discontinued.

How do you release them?

You can pull the clamp portion out with pliers. They can be released from the 1/2" knockout with a screwdriver or other tool.

Will these securely hold Romex 14-2 in a steel junction box?

Yes, once the clamp is pushed in place, they hold pretty well.

These are the best NM connectors (Halex 27515 3/8" (1/2" knockout)) I have found recently that can hold 1 or two NM cables. Upside - they are relatively easy to install and handle up to two NM cables. Downside - you really need channel locks or some tool to press in the clamp portion. It does hold well once in place. The other issue, though, is that you have to be able to push the clamp portion in, so in a tight place that might be difficult. The predecessor, the yellow (27580) duplex connector is now discontinued, but was actually more flexible - but didn't hold as well. (I still liked them better.) If you put 4 of these is close proximity I don't know how you would get the clamp portion installed.

Nice connector, holds on to wire and you don’t have to fight getting in the wire or connector.

Great Idea, Horrible Manuafacturing
There are other reviews that say the same thing but these are a piece of junk. Not sure if it's because they manufacture them for Home Depot or not. They click into the electrical box just fine. When you have to use the plastic tab to clamp down on the wire, just forget about it. Designed so poorly that you do need channel locks and some serious pressure to get the plastic piece into the fitting to clamp down on the wire. What a piece of junk. I've used others that work just fine but this brand is terrible.

Sturdy- but hard to use
They need to go back to the drawing board. The assemy itself is relatively easy to insert into the knockout. The cable retaining clip portion is a bear to push into place. You have to use channel locks or pliers of some kind. I cannot imagine using them in a confined area

Where have these things been my entire electrician life? If you get creative with your fish tape, these will eliminate the need for any "tear out" when (for example) adding a new outlet on a dedicated circuit. No more spackle / paint touch-ups!

flawed snap in mechanism
I bought two 5 packs of these, and realized after slotting then in the knockouts that the snap in piece was impossible to push in. I had to slightly shave the plastic in the cavity to get them in. once in they crimp and hold well.

These hold far better than other plastic holders, They don't pull out of boxes easily and secure the wire well. Much faster to install over metal twin screw type holders.
