Is this pipe cover flexible? I want to use it for stainless steel corrugated water heater connectors that are shaped like a large (20") letter "c." If the cover isn't flexible, could you recommend something that would work? Thank you.
Asked by: Nic
This item is very flexible but the size is for much larger pipes like sewer lines or drain lines not so much for the smaller water lines..

I'm interested in saving money. But at a cost over $3 a foot why would anyone do this? Would heating bills really drop enough to justify it?
Asked by: BOB
Most residential steam systems were originally insulated with a "miracle material" called asbestos. When somebody figured out that stuff could kill you, they removed the asbestos from every inch of pipe a homeowner might come into contact with and replaced it with: nothing! The problems that resulted were chalked up to "obsolete" technology, yielding many a misguided, disasterous hydronic "upgrades" or hot-air retrofit. All that's really necessary is to restore the system to working as it was designed, by spending a few hundred dollars on fiberglass pipe covers and a few weekends securing loose hangers and re-insulating pipes.

safe for indoors

is this safe to use indoors if just wrapping around a steam heat pipe to reduce amount of heat it gives off? I'm not certain if fiberglass is appropriate or not

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the Job I still have zone 1 steam heat and in many places the iron pipe had no insulation so I've been using this product. It works. Fits snug, the self-adhesive tape sticks fine. Once you pull the tape, line up the edges and press it down. The sections I did back in '06 are still sticking shut and insulating. The only fault I have with the product is the length; it is ridiculously short and for the price it's expensive. However, there isn't much out there to insulate iron pipes so I make do with this. I use fiber glass on the role for duct work on the iron elbows and joints. Interestingly, electrical tape wrapped a couple times sticks better than duct tape which lifts off from the mild heat loss.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Only OK. This insulation is OK but other brands (knaupf, owens corning) are better quality. In particular, the Frost King products use a single adhesive strip to hold the insulation closed. The other brands use a two-part adhesive strip that offers a much stronger and more permanent seal. Also, at my local independent plumbing/heating supply house, the other brands are less $$$ than this product is at the Depot.
