No - the upper window slides down in front of the lower window bringing the screen down. This is the feature I like best - it prevents children and critters from damaging the screen.

Does this door come with a chain what stops it from swinging all the way open in windy weather???
Asked by: kimmy
I asked this question because when i moved into my house there were already 2 of these exact doors on the house. the piston on the door does NOT hold it if there is a big wind and i have had my door slam open and break the piston which i had to replace and put on something to stop it from happening again. I just bought this door because i was adding a new door onto my house and wanted all of them to match. i do love this door. but no the piston thing does not help with the wind and the door swinging open i know this for a fact. so my question was answered no it does not come with a wind safety chain. so i will be buying on and installing it. so this door does not swing open to far and break. I think most doors would swing open and need a safety chain when its really windy and you are not holding it or it isnt latched. i just wanted to know if one was included. thank you everyone

Simply press in the two Gray push button latches hidden underneath the top pane at the same time and then carefully let the windows slide down the track offering it support from the weight and when you get it to where you want it if not all the way down just released the two buttons on the latch and it should hold in several of the available notches. Or let it go all the way down so both windows are shut. I've had many of those doors and after a few years the latches usually one of them break so you're stuck keeping it in one position if you wanted it open you could put a screw in there sheet metal screw, and it would hold in place of the latch.

Customer Reviews

32 in. x 80 in. 400 Series White Universal Self-Storing Aluminum Storm Door with Brass Hardware is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 1217.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised The directions were pretty well written and well diagrammed. I took the time and reviewed them several times before starting this project, but seriously, with the way the parts (screws, bolts, etc.) are organized and separated in color coded bags, if you follow the directions in a "step by step" manner, I'd be willing to say that almost anyone could have a very successful installation without problems. I gave 4/5 for 'Value' because I think the price could be a little lower. The 'Quality' got 4/5 only because I found a few microscopic imperfections. These imperfections are not noticeable and I probably would not have found them if I wasn't the type to scrutinize things so closely. My only real concern is that I'm wondering how long the tension system will last on the self storing screen. The "Sandstone" color with the nickle door hardware is a wonderful look. We have white siding without much to break up the visual impact. The long wall of white now has a very elegant splash of color.

Product was packed well and arrived at the store for pick up way ahead of schedule. This door is a replacement for the identical EMCO 400 Series door that had not stood up to use at all. Water had intruded and rotted the core after about 4 years. Just to be sure I rebuilt the whole surround and used new brickmold. I did the whole installation single handed and was pleased with the result . The key to success was the EMCO website and installation Video which I watched probably about 5 times and in fact used that as my step by step guide. There is no doubt that the video is the key here as the paper instructions were totally worthless and lacking detail. I would recommend that you worry less about pleasing the masses with multiple languages and have your tech writers do a better job. Elements in the Video were absent in the paper. We will see how this door holds up. It is not part of the house front door but is a side door that gets a lot of use. It gets 4 stars not 5 simply due to the poor paper instructions.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS; DON'T BUY IT!!! This is my 3 replacement in 8 years. They rot out within 2 to 3 years. And being the center core is wood, the door will bend like a banana where you can't close it. If you're NOT handy where you need to pay someone for installation (and replacement once it rots out), then it will cost you that much more to install, remove and reinstall. Another problem I experienced is Anderson's Customer Service. You'll be dealing with someone in a foreign country who's hard to understand and they try at all cost to discourage you from obtaining a replacement. They had more rules and requirements NOT listed within their warranty. I had to threaten them with a lawsuit after following up a dozen times to finally get an authorization letter. It only took me 9 months to resolve on MY Terms which meant NEW Door hardware (the hardware also rotter away; finish totally gone) which they wanted for me to pay for; shipping costs (they didn't want to pay for), and a prorated value for the door (the Biggest Joke!)!!! They're paying for the whole door with new hardware. The way warranties are supposed to be. Again.... Do NOT Buy!

Packaging was a bit too large for my Acura MDX cargo space but managed to tilt it enough to get it "mostly" in. Had to tie down the tailgate for the 6 mile trip home. Installation is a 2 person job however. I have reasonable mechanical ability and quite a few tools and installed it by myself in 3 1/2 hours (really hot here) about 1 month ago. Moving the door around in the garage and getting the door standing into the framework and fastening it is a bit much for one person. I would have welcomed help. I am happy with the product. Looks good and operates smoothly. I installed it on my little-used "people-door" at the back of my garage to keep rain out and to allow air flow into the garage with the inner door open. As with all my projects, I allow enough time for "Murphy's Law of Triplicates" to assert itself.

The way the screen slides up and down the track... BUT the screen is junk. Probably the cheapest screen out there. You would assume that a Pet screen would be the "go to" for ANY screen door. The screen edging is open. If I had my front porch light on, my gap between my storm door and screen would be loaded with bugs. The gap between the track and screen will let ANY type of bug in. I was going to buy another one for my side door. After seeing the craftsmanship, I decided AGAINST it. The door did NOT come with instructions and the customer service was flat out RUDE. We followed with what we could find on the internet, in regards to instructions, and of course, cut the door wrong. There are NOT any pre-cut handle holes and we were off by an inch. THANK YOU Home Depot for exchanging it for a new one, though. It was a complete nightmare. I am keeping this door in my "NEVER BUY AGAIN" List on here. I will NOT Make the same mistake twice.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy, it won't last. Most recent purchase began to rot after only 3 years. The first I purchased had a 12 year warranty in 2004; however, it rotted and failed in 2012, and Emco was good enough to replace the door, but not cover any of the reinstallation cost. So, it was replaced in 2012. I made a mistake of replacing with the same door, thinking it was an odd situation. Now it is 3 years though the first door took 8 years to rot, the replacement door rotted in only 3 years. I also noticed that they no longer offer a 12 year warranty, the reason is obvious. I am now waiting to see if Emco will again replace the door, except this time I'll be smarter and pay more money for an upgrade, if I have that opportunity. Unfortunately, it will be a major problem to return the door to the store, as I now have a bad back and no longer own a truck. I expected higher quality out of a division of Anderson and am very disappointed. Now if I get another door, it will end up costing me 3 times for the installation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Corodes bady in less than 2 years I purchased this EMCO door in Jan of 2012 from Home Depot. The lower portion of the door corroded badly within 2 years in 3 places. I went back to Home Depot to try to get a new door 3 weeks ago. I provided all receipts, pictures serial number etc. The warranty on the door is a full 10 yrs warranty. They said they are still negotiating with Emco. Emco answered them that they will provide a new front panel but not the whole door. The front panel covers the whole door! Maybe 5 hrs labor or more to change that out. Then they told the rep at Home Depot that they still the use pressed wood inside for strength and when that gets wet it corrodes. They said if I want a door that will last the warranty period I have to upgrade to the 4000 series at my own expense. I still do not have an answer from Home Depot on getting a refund. I never will purchase an EMCO door again!
