Questions & Answers

Does the door come with Fram ?

Asked by: Alex
PROPHET said: No, but a pre hung door with frame and hinges of this type is available from Home Depot. This is true but a very similar door (at the store) does come with a frame, at the same price. Always best to see in person.

Can I shorten the door by 1.5" by cutting it off the bottom of the door, or can the door be ordered 78.5" rather than the standard 80"?

Asked by: TcS
I cut this down to 73" using an instructables guide online. It involved cutting off the bottom, routing out foam insulation and some of the wood on the sides, re-installing the bottom rail from the cut off portion, hammering down an extra piece of the steel shell at the bottom of the door to secure the rail in place, then re-installing the bottom weather strip. Overall it took a while but it's fairly straightforward. Be warned that you cannot go any shorter than 73" on this door without cutting off the bottom of one of the decorative panels (unless you also cut the top of the door, which would be crazy).

Is this a good door to prevent or lower the risk for the door being kicked in during a burglary?

Asked by: Sara
Good, but not the best. The best way to lower the risk with any door is to get a good lock set and use longer exterior screws to attach it to the frame. 3.5-4 inch screws.

If you want a steel door that's ready to go and you know how to install it/have someone who knows how to install it, then by all means, get it. I'm more of a fan of the fiberglass version since it doesn't dent. We use this on our door going out to the side yard but should've gone with the fiberglass one instead. Doors are easy and hard to install.. Sure, pop it in, pop in 8 screws and put up some casing and you're done.. In theory. but in reality, the home's door frame isn't perfectly flush. Maybe some stucco broke off, or the wood expanded. For under $100 bucks, it's a great price for a door that can last you a decade or two. I'd still fork out the extra money and get the fiberglass one. Pay someone who knows how to do it, too!

Noticing a lot of complaints regarding the actual width of this (and other) doors. Folks, like with dimensional lumber, you these doors are not exactly 36". In order to do so, you're going to be paying for either a custom door or a higher price for some manufacturers that do fill the exact 36" spec on their door widths. This is done to allow for some play with framing as not all homes have "exact" door jambs studded in. So in essence, it's not the door manufacturer... but your home's dimensions. This is why they make shims folks. You wanted a less expensive door... my suggestion, rate on the overall construction of the door, durability and how it performs, not the dimensions, which rests solely upon the installer/buyer.

X 79 this is pretty normal for a steel door as it is better to not have to plane or cut it down. Actually these are 35 3/4” giving a 1/8”reveal on both sides and 79” so there is a 1” gap for threshold on the bottom. If it were a wood door then plane and cut away, but this was built to fit with out having to do that and risk damaging the thin steel skin.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super disappointed In a pinch to replace my front door and this looked very close to my original door. I got the last one and should have looked at both sides of the door because the side I didn't was very scuffed and dented. The main thing I'm not happy with is that it's not 36 inch, but 35.75 inch. I don't care about comments that it's due to rough in or whatever. I needed 36 inch like my last door. Now there is a gap that I've got to fill. Hopefully a weather strip will do.

This door warped all throughout. It was scolding to the touch. They will not even honor their warranty if you put a storm door on it. TERRIBLE CHEAP product. Save yourself the time, money, and aggravation in the long run and go with a better brand and product. Cheap is cheap and you get what you pay for and it is very true with this product.

However, the application I purchased it for required a solid core. The word "slab" means to me a solid panel. Also, I believe the product description contained the word "solid". The door itself has very little wood inside the metal casing. It is actually filled with a light weight styrafoam. I believe I was misled that the door was "solid" or a "slab". Slab of what, styrafoam?

The door dents exceptionally easy, fine, i didnt expect this to be terribly dent resistant given the price. My biggest complaint is that paint easily peels off this door. I used berh premium exterior paint and i can easily peel it off with a dull finger nail. Wasnt this door supposed to be primed to allow for an easy top coating? Im stuck with a useless door now... what a waste of time and money!
