I’d like to try this but it’s already winter. Will the adhesive work in temperatures below freezing? Or do you have to apply the kit in warmer weather, before winter hits?
Asked by: AZnative
Best to apply before winter hits. Haven't had good success with the adhesive holding if you apply after it gets below freezing. It will form a better bond if you do it when it is warm. Also make sure the surface it cleaned well before you try to apply it.

will it work on metal threshold and do you need the hairdryer.

Asked by: angie
No hair dryer is required. This product is installed by first roughly fitting the plastic film over the patio door frame (the trim) via the two-sided tape, then tightly fitting the film by lifting and re-adhering a section at a time to achieve a tight, nearly invisible installation. Achieving a good seal at the threshold can be tricky. This product seals best if the film perimeter adheres to a surface which is 90 degrees from the broad surface of the patio door. For instance, if a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood represents your patio door, excellent results can be achieved by applying the two-sided tape to the thin edges of the plywood and stretching the film over the entire sheet. Good results also can be obtained by applying the two-sided tape to the flat surface of the plywood and then installing the film. However, other installation configurations are not likely to provide satisfactory results. Example: if a 9 x 13 cake pan represents the opening you are attempting to seal, and you apply the two-sided tape to the vertical surfaces of the inside of the pan, the film will pull off fairly easily in windy conditions. Because the trim at my threshold extends about an inch beyond the the other trim pieces, I solved my threshold problem by constructing a wood filler of two heavy 2x4's to lie on the threshold. I screwed them together with exterior screws, cut them to fit snugly within the opening, then applied two coats of a primer made for sealing wood that would receive adhesives. When completed, the front edge of this filler piece was flush with the other door trim pieces. I then applied the two-sided tape to the front of this device and to the thin edges of the other door trim pieces and installed the film. I discovered that tightly stretched film tended to pull the wood filler piece out of position, but I slightly relaxed the film to remedy this situation.

Asked by: james
It would be best if you contact 3M directly. I trimmed the excess film after covering my patio door again this year and have no way of knowing the original dimensions.

Can it be used under a kitchen outside over hang to prevent cold air coming into the kitchen?

Can it be used under a kitchen outside over hang to prevent cold air coming into the kitchen?
Asked by: Annie
This will all depend on what the tape will be applied too and will it stick. It’s designed for windows and doors. Without seeing your exact application it is tough to determine

84 in. x 112 in. Outdoor Patio Door Insulator Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Usually Great Results Just went through the polar vortex of 2019. Have been using this product for years on a large picture window. Installed as usual this fall and all was well until yesterday. Is there an issue with tape adhesion at -25? We got up the other morning and living room was colder than normal and interior of window was frosted over. Went outside and my sheeting was gone. Tape is still on the frame. Would negative temperature have been the issue? Supposed to get in Mid 40's this weekend in Chicago, so going try and reinstall new sheet for the rest of the winter.

The 2nd one lasted a month before catastrophically failing. Both failed during wind/rain storms. The adhesive just didn't hold up to the weather here in Northern California.

After cleaning the surface as recommended, we applied the tape and were able to attach and detach the plastic multiple times to get it to the point where it was taut enough. We chose to work on a day that was rather gusty but because the tape could hold the plastic for us while we were working on another area, it didn't pose the problems that you might imagine. So far, so good.
