Product Overview

This native bog plant, Spider Lily, Hymenicallis coronaria, has one of the most fragrant and attractive flowers of any pond plant. The delicate white narrowly petaled with a web-like center carries a noticeable fragrance during the summer blooms. Its blade-like dark green leaves provide an interesting back drop for this desirable specimen. A must have for any pond.
  • A perennial in zones 7 - 10 that is a reliable summer bloomer with plenty of character
  • Thrives in both full sun and shade conditions
  • Another desirable feature of this plant is that is stays in a "clump", as opposed to rapid spreading growth
  • A big advantage of getting a plant already potted in aquatic soil is it has an established root system that makes the transition into your pond seamless

can I plant it in dirt?

Answer

Hi Casey! Our plants are raised with their "feet wet" as aquatic plants to go in ponds. This plant can be planted in dirt, but it needs to be in damp soil/dirt. Many of these bog plants can take a seasonally wet/dry location. This is one I would say likes a very wet location in a pond and would not make a very good landscape plant.

I grow mine in the ground, and they do very well. I water them a couple of times a week. Very hardy plant once it is established. As with most plants do not fertilize for the first month after you plant it. You can add vitamin B or epsom salt ( 1 tbls per gal. to water ) when you first water your plant after planting in the ground to reduce shock.

How tall does this plant get?

I have two of these in my yard that I grew from the ball shaped bulbs that I collected from a friends Spider Lily. One is in a shaded spot and the other in a sunny location . I've had them growing in the ground for two years now. The leaves on both plants are five feet long and the ones at the bottom combine for a ten foot total spread on each plant.

Do I need to purchase a seperate plant basket or does it come with one

Answer

This Spider Lily comes to you planted in a 4 inch pot using DynaDirt Aquatic Soil, also available from this site. It will be ready to take from your box to your pond without any fuss. It would like to be planted in a shallow part of your pond along the edges and will be fine in that pot the first year. You can always put it in a larger pot whenever you would like.

I saw these growing as wildflowers on the side of the road and had to have them! I expected bulbs, but they came packaged with a nice amount of leaves. I replanted them in flower potting soil and didn't mix it with anything like sand since I want it holding liquid. I did make sure they're in a pot with drainage as I read they're not supposed to be in standing water until they're mature. That was a little over two weeks ago, and they're doing great! There's definitely some small damage to the leaves from shipping (what are you gonna do?), but they look really good. I'm very happy, and very excited to see if they flower next spring! I'm hoping Home Depot will continue offering such awesome native species for sale!
