It is 3 5/8 so it fits on a 4 x 4 post (which is actually 3.5 x 3.5 of course) with just a slight gap . They have to be glued down.
Travis, Yes the outside of the base is 4 1/2 inches. The widest part of the base is 5.31 inches. The inside of the base dimensions fit a a 4 in x 4 in wood fence post.

Measure the newel. I think the cap would be too big for most newels I’ve seen. The caps have just a little extra space on a four by four. Your newel would have to be that size, 3.5 in.

Hudly, The square on the top of the post cap is 3 in x 3 in.
How are they attached to post?
I drilled small pilot holes to prevent cracking then screwed them in with 2 in coated screws, but I added a round post cap to the top (with a pilot hole) which hid the screws. Mike
