It's about 4", not a smaller nominal size. However, see my review before considering.

I wrote a previous review in June of 2014 when I used these posts to build a fence. At that time I thought they were a good product. Now 5 years later all the posts that I put into the ground are rotting out and falling over. Very disappointed. I thought they would last for 15-20 years since they are advertised as pressure treated, especially since I live in dry country (high desert). If you purchase these don't put them into the ground. They rot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Building a fence I'm using these post to build a fence. I'm putting them in both the ground and using them as rails. So far so good. Once they are in the sun for several weeks they loose the green tinting. I have used an oil based wood preservative on mine to hopefully make them last longer. The nice thing is I'm having to build my fence over a period of time and with each new shipment the store gets in the post size stays uniform. They will tend to split once they dry out and are in the sun for awhile hence that's why I use the wood preservative on them. I think they are a little expensive since these are peeler cores and I know from my past experience working in the lumber industry peeler cores are sold cheap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from These posts dry rot in only two years I used 58 of these posts over the last 4 years to build grape trellis. I set them in concrete to give them a longer life expecting they would last at least 20 years. This summer 5 of them only two years old broke off just below ground level during a moderate wind. I thought it was caused by too much lateral wind force even though the posts were set 16 ft apart which is less than the 24 ft recommended by experts. Today I started the process of digging them out and discovered the reason they broke was from dry rot, not excessive wind load. The pressure treatment did not do the job. Having invested well over a thousand dollars in materials plus weeks of labor I am very disappointed. I suspect they will all rot out over the next few years. Don't make the mistake that I did.
