Preventative Maintenance Plan

1. Depending on the location of your outdoor project with regard to direct sun exposure, foliage coverage, etc., it may be sufficient to clean/brighten and recoat every two years. 2. If you decide to wait two or more years to perform your next cleaning/brightening, you may want to use a power washer. Be sure that the cleaner/brightener you use contains a mildewcide.

Choosing The Right Stain Or Paint

When determining the right stain and paint for your deck, consider what color will best enhance the wood's finish.

Paint or Stain Tips

If you desire to paint or stain the treated wood project, it is important that the wood be dry enough to accept a coating. The best way to determine if the wood is sufficiently dry to paint or stain is to sprinkle droplets of water onto the wood. If the water droplets are absorbed, the wood is ready to be painted or stained. If the water droplets bead on the surface of the wood, it is too wet. You should wait a few days before attempting to paint and stain the wood.

This sturdy Pressure-Treated Timber #2 Southern Yellow Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. Treated for protection from termites and rot, it is ideal for a variety of applications including decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor projects where lumber is exposed to the elements. Responsibly manufactured from renewable southern yellow pine, this lumber is both safe and environmentally friendly when used properly and can be painted to match any home or business exterior.Treated wood is typically still wet when it’s delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

Supply and demand. With homeowners and renters home a lot during this Covid epidemic, home patios, decks, etc. have been built a lot. Supply is low and demand for 4x4s is high. Home Depot has to pay more for extra shipments and expedited delivery. The costs get passed on to the consumer.

What’s with the almost $10 per post price hike? 6 months ago 4x4x8’s were $9 each.

Yeah Bill… That’s right. With the pandemic hitting in the country hard , everything‘s going up. Paper plates, paper towels, bathroom tissue, paper cups are all derived from the products of wood. And as you can tell , most of the stores have been wiped out on most of these products. So if that’s the case which I’m sure it is, treating what’s left will be at a higher premium along with the fact that it won’t be as much in stock. Let’s hope we can beat this thing to get these prices down to normal because it’s not just wood products, but quite a few other products that’s been affected. :-)

Can these be used as posts for a fresh water lake dock? How long will they hold up for?

I Purchased these 4 x 4 treated posts for adding solar lamp lights to my yard, and they went in like a breeze after digging holes with a post hole digger. After the holes were dug to my desired depth I poured in fast setting cement, added water and after 20 minutes it was ready to add my lamp on top.

I bought four of these to build a fence around a slab for a storage area. I put them two feet in the ground and fix them with ready made concrete. I painted the exposed area. I leveled them, but made the mistake of not square one with the other in line. This turned out to not be a big problem as the were lined up pretty well with the slab.. I copy the existing fencing, using 2x4s and left over fencing I had. I bought the ready to assemble door from Home Depot. I am quite happy how it all turned out.

No doubt the worst
I purchased 9 eight footers an 5 six footers of the ground contact 4x4 and every one has split in two weeks of installing all of about 75 feet of hand railing. The ground contact is supposed to be treated prime material. Also the 2x4 ground contact hand railing is now cracking and warping is starting. I purchased 63 2x2x8 #1 prime for the pickets, hoping to get 3 from each stick which didnt happen either. Some of the pickets are warping already. I will spend a lot of time replacing pieces over time. This has to be the worst lumber I have ever purchased in 35 years of buying. The 5/4 prime is also doing the same splitting. Looked for contact emails from Yellowood and Universial forest product but nothing found. If you would like more photos please send an email address. This material was replacing 21yr old stock that hasnt split in all of its years as bad as this material has in two weeks
