i have carpeted stairs with raw unfinished wood under it. can i install these treads on top of the raw wood?

i was going to add moulding as a bullnose and wainscott for the risers.
Asked by: Vince
Hi Vince, the easy answer is "yes you can," but it will come at a price of your staircase being out of building code. If you place these new treads over existing ones, the first step up from the bottom will be 1-inch taller than it was. The last step will be 1-inch shorter than it was. This variance may push you out of building code which, in most jurisdictions, limit a variance of only 5/8-inches. Plus, you will notice this difference as you use the stairs. <p><p>We suggest removing existing treads, then replacing with these treads. That is the safest, code-compliant method of replacing your treads. If you have additional questions, we'll answer as quickly as we can. Thank you.

Had I been thinking, I would have done this. For my application it would have been easier than removing the old tread. But every application is different. Make careful measurements before deciding.

Asked by: John
Hi John, these treads are designed for interior use only. We suggest using pressure-treated pine treads for any exterior projects. If you have additional questions, we'll do our best to reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

Customer Reviews

48 in. x 11-1/2 in. Unfinished Pine Stair Tread is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality solid pine stair First off, two or three of the other reviews were obviously written by the same (albeit, angry) person. Pine is not my first choice for the most durable stair tread, but these treads are good quality for the price. Others complained that the treads are glued--well, I hope so! If you ever tried to use a single plank as a stair tread you woud soon find that they warp, regardless of how much glue or how many screws you use. Every pine stair tread I ever saw consisted of roughly 2-inch strips glued together with alternating grain direction to prevent warping. Solid wood does not mean a single slab of wood. I do my fair share of bad reviews, but I hate to see a good product get bashed by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

This is a good stair tread if you are going to replace a stair that will eventually be stained or carpeted. Keep in mind, this is not a single piece of pine. It is several pieces of pine glued together with a pine veneer. This may not be a good piece if you need to cut a radius and you plan to bullnose the edges.
