Our house is a late 60's, early 70's home with floating (unbacked steps/no risers). The stairs have had carpet installed on them until recently. We replaced the carpet with laminate so now the stairs are raw wood with ugly carpet tacks on the sides and bottom. Are these rounded on the outside edge or are they square? I want to paint or stain the new stair treads.
Asked by: Grandmotherneedshelp
the nose is the only rounded portion, sides are square. you would router the side if you don't like the square.

Has anyone used these as shelves?

Has anyone used these as shelves?
Asked by: SMH
That's my intended use...wife wants more book cases. Tom Silva used stair treads in an episode for this very purpose which I thought was a really good idea. 3 for shelves, 2 for sides, 1 for top. He designed it so you rip a strip off the shelves then that becomes the kick on the bottom. The top is the only piece where the ends are exposed. He rounded them over on the sides but these may not be suitable for that. Maybe cover the ends with a piece of pine stock. Sure beats the heck out of a $30 oak stair tread pricewise, though. I've used cabinet grade plywood before but these seem similar on the total cost and simpler to build overall.

Can I use construction adhesive to glue these down to cover old laminate (possible asbestos) tile stairs?

Asked by: Steve
As long as you completely cover the contact surface with adhesive .

Do these need to be sanded before they are stained?

Asked by: kali
Hi Kali, this is a great question, so thank you for asking. We always recommend a finish sanding before applying any paint/stain to remove burrs, imperfections, and other minor nicks that are incurred with shipping/handling. The best sandpaper to use would be a 200-grit or higher, then a final wipe down with some tack cloth. If you have additional questions, we’ll reply as quickly as we can. Or, you may call our Customer Service Line at 678-455-5188 (M-F, 8-4 ET) where we can assist you with most any question you have. Thank you!
