can you put metal roofing straight to it? or does it need a barrier?

Asked by Tim May 12, 2018
1
Answer

A typical metal roof deck can be installed directly to ZIP System sheathing and tape without an additional underlayment or slip sheet (for roof pitches 4:12 or greater) without voiding the ZIP System sheathing warranty; however, for copper roofs we do recommend an additional slip sheet due to the expansion/contraction properties of copper roofs.

Fast, easy, reasonable pricing. We wanted to do everything possible to seal our 100+ year old home remodeling project. before applying the Zip tape we additionally caulked every joint and cut line and nails. Two thirds of the exterior completed last summer and over the winter (Maine) the lowered heating cost paid for the material.

Installed this product on a few small roofs and sealed with the zip tape. During the installation we had some heavy downpours and had zero leaks. The rain ran right off the zip with no absorption. The sheets do have some weight to them which was expected. The only issue I had with the product is the lack of uniform coating of the top, "red", coating. There were several small spots on each piece that had bare OSB. May have just been a bad batch. Had the top coat been evenly and uniformly coated this is a hands down 5 stars.

I was replacing an 8-foot patio slider door with an American Craftsman 6-foot slider from Home Depot. I needed to wait until I had the wall opened uo to determine the dimension of the sheathing I would need. Not only was I framing the opening smaller, but there was water damage from a leak on the old door. The 5/8" Zip sheathing was perfect for the job. I chose it because of the warrantee and the waterproof membrane on the exterior side. I measured the dimensions of several pieces I would need and had a H. D. associate cut it on the store panel saw. Excellent product and service!

Because Massachusetts does not consider zip sheathing an underlayment, you are still required by building code to use felt paper under roof shingles. This makes zip system more expensive and takes longer to do the job. I consider the product excellent but not worth the money when used in Massachusetts
