How many boards would I need to cover 1444 linear square feet?

Asked by: Fence
Depends upon your gap size between each board, roughly 252 if you have an 1/4" gap, if that is you actually mean 1444 linear feet.

how many pickets are in a normal panel
Asked by: scott
16 pickets in an 8 ft section. You should buy 10% overage, and you can order the pickets for pick up so it will be ready and waiting by the time you get there - saves a ton of time

Pickets were 5 1/2" at the top and 51/4" at the bottom o n 100 or more pickets. I have never had this problem before. I will go back and take pictures and add if Home Depot permits. Makes big gap at bottom I will have to measure from now on to be safe.

So where many are likely using this for fencing, I wanted to make a wood wall. These fence pickets seemed like a good option, and it turned out lovely. Cedar is cedar, a softwood that can be very annoying if you're trying to do much with it. These come fairly rough textured, so if you're using indoors, you will want to run through a planer or sander. I used an orbital sander and sanding all the boards took a long time. Were I to do it again, a planer would be best. I finished them with Briwax Antique Mahogany Paste Wax. The wall was installed Spring 2016, so it's been a year now and still quite lovely. My wife loves it every time she goes down to her piano studio to teach. I may have had a non-traditional use, but it came out excellently and I would certainly buy again. I keep from a five star rating because there was a good deal of inconsistency in the boards which required a bit of sorting through the pile, and the roughness can be pretty extreme on some pieces where others felt smooth off the rack.

Started with picking out each picket but quickly realized that almost all pickets were good quality. Finally ended up just filling up cart and taking back any bad pickets. Ended up with only about 5 bad pickets out of 250 pieces and was able to use them elsewhere. Knots are very tight and surface has a nice semi-rough texture. Stained with oil based stain before installation and the pickets took stain well. The Chocolate color stain hid almost all board imperfections (knots and color variations). Staining was easy but time consuming as I could stain about 50 pickets per hour (both sides and all edges). I am hoping staining all sides will prevent warping and twisting. Decided to do a board-on-board installation with a 3 1/2 inch spacing between pickets. Used roofing nailer to install pickets with a small head roofing nail (brass color head). I was worried that pickets would split during nailing but I didn't have even one board split. Nailing was very fast and easy but required about 180 psi to seat nail head properly. Used florescent red string across top of boards to align and turned out very straight. Used level on every third picket to check upright alignment. I could install about 100 pickets per hour by myself. It helps to have one person set board and one person nailing but can be done by just one person. This is a major improvement over the old 3 1/2 inch picket fence as there is absolutely no gaps between boards. Much better appearance and was not very expensive compared to side by side boards.

Home Depot, at least the store near me doesn't quality control their inventory. I ordered a delivery of 260 pickets. Of those, more than half were cull scrap that I had to sort through and return. Two thirds of the replacements they returned were full scrap and some were the same boards that I previously returned. Long story short, it took 5 trips to the store and over 12 hours of my time and energy to finally get decent lumber. I saw the store employee restacking split, warped, and broken up lumber for the next buyer to have to sort through. When you order a delivery, they just use a fork lift to grab whatever junk is on the rack and deliver it.

I go in and dig through the pile to find pickets that are mostly blemish free for home projects. They are extremely inconsistent to the point where I couldn't recommend anyone blindly ordering them unless you don't care too much about uniformity. The reason I can't recommend them at all anymore is because they're too wet on the pallet and the last two pickets I took home cracked within 24 hours, one severely enough that I had to just break it apart. Not sure what the deal is with this but it's pretty unfortunate. I've had pickets in the past that never had a problem after I brought them home, truly hit or miss.
