how many pickets are in a normal panel

how many pickets are in a normal panel
Asked by: scott
16 pickets in an 8 ft section. You should buy 10% overage, and you can order the pickets for pick up so it will be ready and waiting by the time you get there - saves a ton of time

Could these be used to build a raised garden box?

Suppose you cut the "dog-ear" off, could the plank be used to build a raised garden box? Would these hold up untreated in the elements?
Asked by: bigfred
yes it depends on the size of the raised bed. if you were planning a big box, then no. those raised kits for about $35 uses these, 2 boards high, so they are 3x3 and 10" high. if you go to 4x4 i would put a stake about 2' down each side so it doesn't bow outwards. i am using one this year and it seems fine. probably wont get as many years from them though, but for the price you can have cheap boxes.

So where many are likely using this for fencing, I wanted to make a wood wall. These fence pickets seemed like a good option, and it turned out lovely. Cedar is cedar, a softwood that can be very annoying if you're trying to do much with it. These come fairly rough textured, so if you're using indoors, you will want to run through a planer or sander. I used an orbital sander and sanding all the boards took a long time. Were I to do it again, a planer would be best. I finished them with Briwax Antique Mahogany Paste Wax. The wall was installed Spring 2016, so it's been a year now and still quite lovely. My wife loves it every time she goes down to her piano studio to teach. I may have had a non-traditional use, but it came out excellently and I would certainly buy again. I keep from a five star rating because there was a good deal of inconsistency in the boards which required a bit of sorting through the pile, and the roughness can be pretty extreme on some pieces where others felt smooth off the rack.

I buy about 5 of these at a time and let them sit for a year before I install them to replace rotted/ bowed or twisted pickets as needed. Last batch ordered online yesterday, and picked up was wet/fresh, smelled wonderful...a bit rough and light on the stain but I don't care. They will age over time. No truly bad boards. I have gotten about 10 years out of cedar pickets as long as the cross boards don't fully rot out....and accept it if they twist or cup but so far it has only been about 5% of my total of 325 pickets over that time. I pre-drill, then screw the pickets in with Hillman Fas-n-Rite 8 x 1 5/8" Exterior Coated Wood Screws with Bugle heads from Home Depot. No more nails for me although I will use Grip Rite 5D 1 3/4" Electro galvanized Ring Shank nails from Home Depot for the end pieces that cover the posts. Those will literally never come out put into pressure treated posts so be prepared to shred your pickets if you need to replace them if nailed in. Yeah, it's a lot of xtra work to screw the pickets in, but waay easier to replace when the time comes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from have a builder install it, for a warp free install for a board that comes precut, cedar, consistently the same and is easy to work with, its a no brainer. for the guy who had his fence get all warped, try having someone who knows wood do the install. maybe a carpenter. don't space your rails more than 4' apart. posts no more than 8' apart. cup every board facing the same way against the rails and use 1-5/8" deckmate brand tan screws for a secure hold against drying and minimal warping.

I hand-picked 78 WR Cedar Fence Pickets and was very pleased with the outcome. Quality wood without cracks/many blemishes. Like most of the smaller wood choices at Home Depot these fence posts are kept fairly saturated to keep integrity and keep the post free of cracks. I had to sift through many boards that had mold/mildew on them, but overall I chose boards without blemishes and was helped by the Home Depot staff to transport them to my truck. This product exceeded my expectations and the rawness of the wood really made my project look great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cedar Fence Pickets I've used these in the past in the Gulf Coast (Houston area). Moved to a slightly more arid climate (Bastrop). Intend to use them here, as a privacy & North wind brace on my patio. I am age 60, a DIY'er & female. Have never had any problems with them & HD will allow return of flawed boards. Check & pick your boards carefully!
