how long will my stronger need to be for a 42inch height

Asked by Cletus831 April 13, 2021

Answer

Hi Cletus831, Based on the 42-inch height, you would need a 6-step stringer with a riser height of 7 in. Unfortunately, the treated stringers that we have are set-up for a 6.75 in. step height. This is not going to work in your situation. Please ask a Pro Associate at Home Depot about a special order or considering building it yourself/hiring a handyman/carpenter or someone who is familiar with the building code in your area.

Answer

Hello Alex, We looked at the height of your wall, and it is about 1/8th of an inch. off to work with our 7-step stringer. We can suggest that you see if the manufacturer can build you a custom stringer, or that you build one yourself.

can I buy 16" or 18" step width? or do I have to make it

Asked by AA April 7, 2021

Answer

AA, We want to make sure that we understand your question. Do you mean stair riser height , stair tread depth (what your foot stands on), or the spacing of the stringer? We calculated the step height for both 16 in. and 18 in. The 16 in. height would give you a step riser height of 5.33 in.; this is a bit shallow, in our opinion, and it could be a trip hazard. The 18 in. height, though, would give you a 6 in. height step, this seems more reasonable and less of a hazard to us. The 3-step stringer is what you would need for the stringer with either of the two scenarios. If we are incorrect in replying to your question, please write to us again and we'll do our best to address your request.

Hello Cody, Here is the math that we suggest: Take the total height that you intend to span - 25 in., and divide that number by 7.75 in. That gives us 3.22. Round up to the next full number, and you get 4. You need a 4-step stringer. For the step height, divide your original number - 25 by 4 (the number of steps that your stringer is built to accommodate). That is 6.25. Your riser height would be 6.25, and that is not going to work with the 4-step stringer because our stringer is an inch too tall. You will need make a special stringer or inquire with a PRO associate about ordering one from the manufacturer.

how many steps will i need for a 4 ft wall

Answer

Hello Question, Unfortunately, it looks like you need a 7-step stringer, and Home Depot does not have that in pressure-treated wood. The good news, however, is that you can contact a PRO associate about making a special order request from the manufacturer. If you'd prefer not to go this route, though, we suggest hiring a carpenter who is familiar with the building code in your area or building your own stringer from a 2 x 12 pressure-treated board.

Hello Rey, It seems that you will need a 12-step. This would be a custom order or one that you/a carpenter would have to construct from a 2 x 12.

Hi Larry, This is a single stringer.

What is the width of the depth of the stair?

Asked by 1T March 14, 2021

Answer

Hello 1T, We attempted to figure discern what width of the depth of the stair related to, but weren't sure if you were referring to how wide the staircase could be with a pair of stringers, or if there was a typo and you meant width and depth of the stringer. Actual dimensions for the stringer are 1.5 in. x 11.25 in. x 35.64 in., and the riser height is 6-3/4 in.,with run height being 10 in. Also, all of our stringers are cut from 2 x 12s. If this is not the information which you were looking for, though, we suggest that you go to the boxed-off Info & Guides section of the product page and click on FAQ; this link has all the drawings and dimensions for 3-step up to a 6-step stringer. We hope that this will help.

poor quality stair stringers
I purchased these pre-cut stair stringers. They are garbage made with poor qaulity lumber. I should have bought my own wood and taken the time to cut the stringers myself.

Great for those who don't want to mess with calculating rise and run. Convenient. Even as a template to cut your own. One of the stringers was trying to split. Had to pre drill and screw it. Otherwise dimensions were consistent.

I made a online purchase for a project. I waited a week for my order to come in. I picked up my order today. When I took it out of the box, I could see how poor the quality was. The product that you sent with me today is in no way usable from a safety perspective as there were cracks almost all the way through 4 of the 5 steps. I do not understand how something like this could even get out of your store.

The wood was faulty and split in many places before I could even try to drill a hole. When I did it split off more. Even for a small screw. All 3 stringers were like this as well as one not being cut correctly.
