Q:is it safe to store food in this?

A:  Martha - this bucket is not considered food safe. You could use a Mylar bag as a liner to use this bucket. Otherwise Leaktite does sell a white food-safe bucket (search internet# 300197644). Food safe products will be explicitly marked as such.

      A:  Hello Jane, we do not add any UV protectant to our black buckets.

        A:  Black plastics have carbon black in them which is a natural UV inhibitor. Black buckets won't degrade in 3 months like orange buckets.

          A:  Hi Rich, Leaktite does not make a square bucket. Searching on the Home Depot website, I didn't come up with any hints. You may need a different supplier.

                      I bought this bucket and a black lid, sold separately, to raise earthworms. Cut a large hole in the lid with a hole saw per the system of Larry Hall, a respected worm raiser from Minnesota. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=ARgqrg2ch_0 The hole allows entry of air and food but prevents worms from escaping. Since worms do not like light, I selected the opaque black bucket. The Argee brand bucket meets all my expectations and makes an excellent earthworm habitat at low cost.
