Horse hair has always been great for painting and other uses. I wouldn't say it's a value deal but it appears to be a lifetime tool; usually I despise plastic but in this case being submerged in water constantly and drying it doesn't give or take. It can be mounted from the middle or to the side (say you have hard-to-reach areas). It takes some practice, but you can produce an AMAZING result with this simple tool; I can't wait to use it on one of my next projects.

As a texture and faux finish contractor, I use joint compound to do many interesting finishes. This is probably one of my favorite tools. I use it quite often for many different types of wall textures. This is the definitive stipple tool used for generations. As with a stomp brush, the most professional results will be if you use the method of rolling loose joint compound on the surface first. You want to make sure you have a product that has a long open time. No quick dry stuff for this process. It will be like rolling paint. Once you have your surface ready you need to "butter" the surface of the tool. By butter I mean that you add mud to it before you start. Many ways to stipple, but the main one is straight on. If you want more peaks, you tilt it sideways. If you want more of a pattern, you can trim the center or outside sections. I have about six of these in various modifications. This can be used with your hand or there are openings for screwing on a handle. I do take the time to clean mine although they are fairly inexpensive if you forget. Joint compound does not come off easily once dried.

The Anvil 5 inch horse hair stippling texture brush is a nice looking and functional tool. The cap or top is made of tough plastic that should hold up well and has both top and side threaded holes for attaching it to your handle of whatever length you’re going to be using for your project. It will accept a standard 3/4 inch broom handle and extension poles. Great for creating textured patterns.

All the info about this brush says "drywall texturing," but don't be fooled ... this little guy is fabulous for so much more. It's medium stiff and has a handle that you could use on anything that needs a little more abrasion than a sponge, but not so much that you would risk scratching the surface. It has three threaded handle holes that allow you to get a little distance (maybe cleaning cobwebs from a high ceiling) or maybe a bit of pressure for spots on the floor. You can get it wet. You can use it dry. It's a great tool to have on the shelf and you'll find all sorts of things to use it for ... and maybe none of them have anything to do with drywall.
